A sincere and most heartfelt appreciation for this thread from the Mean Green Nation.

Drew Smith was a good kid from a good family down in Bay City, Texas, from all that I have heard. His father is a principal in the Bay City ISD and was very much involved with this son even in going with him on all his recruiting visits to other campuses.

He will always have a unique and special legacy at UNT as the first QB to lead us to a bowl win in the 2002 New Orleans Bowl, but certainly more important than any of that, he will be missed as a promising young man who most unfortunately had his life cut short.

Again, SMU Mustangs, thanks for your sincere thoughts and prayers for the Smith family.

Yes, this is very sad news. Our thoughts are with the family and the North Texas football community. I am sure Ramon Flanigan was close with this young man.

Name: Andrew Smith
Position: Quarterback
Hometown: Bay City, TX

2003: Will battle Scott Hall for the starting quarterback position after a successful 2002 season.

2002: Replaced the injured Scott Hall in the season-opener at Texas and started the final 12 games of the season… Recorded a 8-4 record as a starter… Threw for 1,206 yards and seven touchdowns… Ranked second in the Sun Belt with a pass efficiency rating of 140.1 in conference games… improved his passing totals in each of the last four regular season games, culminating in a career-high 14 completions for 206 yards and two touchdowns in the finale against Middle Tennessee… Also had two touchdowns in the win over New Mexico State that decided the conference championship… Threw the first touchdown of his career against Alabama… Had touchdown tosses of 45 and 40 yards against Middle Tennessee, representing the longest scoring strikes of his young career… Was awarded the Ja’Quay Wilburn Award for Outstanding Offensive Back by the coaching staff.

2001: Andrew was a red shirt.

High School/Personal: Smith led his high school team to the Class 4A Division I state championship his senior year. Smith threw for 134 yards and three touchdowns in the title game. His senior year, he passed for 2,281 yards and 23 touchdowns and was an honorable all-state pick. In his two seasons as a starter he led the Black Cats to a combined record of 22-3. Smith received first-team all-district 24-4A and all-area recognition as a senior. As a junior he completed 35 of 60 passes for 567 yards and nine touchdowns. Andrew is the son of Andres and Berrilyn Smith and was born June 20, 1983 in Freeport, Texas.

My heart goes out first to Smith's family. Nobody should ever have to deal with the loss of a child.

Beyond that, my heart goes out to Coach Darrell Dickey, Coach Ramon Flanigan and the rest of the UNT coaching staff, players and fans. This is the kind of event that puts everything in perspective. I'm sure UNT will play this year with Smith in their thoughts, and football fans everywhere should wish the best for the Mean Green as they work their way through a very tough time. I certainly do.

It is my understanding that Coach Flanagan and Drew Smith were extremely close. I am sure your ex SMU QB great and our Offense Coordinator is in need of as many thoughts and prayers as the Smith family themselves.

This takes me back (as I'm sure some of you older SMU alums) to a terrible time on the week of an SMU/NT game in 1974 when one of your own players was struck down too early in life with some form of menagitis. I believe that SMU football player's last name was Statten as I recall.

All just too young......

Thanks for your thoughts & prayers, HorsePower. A grateful Mean Green Nation appreciates them from all of you over here.

R.I.P.

Car wrecks are a parent's worst nightmare. How very sad to lose such a nice young man, football or not. If we were playing UNT this year, I would wear a green ribbon with his number on it to pay respects to his family, his team, and our friends in Denton. Peace out, bro.
