Practice Updates?Anybody got some updates for us? How are the QB's looking. WR's? RB's? O-line? Hell, the whole defense?
How is Phillips throwing the ball? If he's going to be the starter, we're going to need to keep defenses honest. For three years we've been run only which makes us very easy to defend. Let's hope we can consistently throw the ball this season . . .
Quarterbacks looked good. Not razor-sharp, but it was the first couple days of practice when I saw them. Phillips looks sharp, and the two JUCOs showed pretty accurate arms, including downfield. We have three legit QBs, so if the starter stumbles, I wouldn't be afraid to play a backup.
Other thoughts from my view through the bars: > Jessie Henderson is not as small as I thought he was. When I saw a roster listed him at 5-8, 170 or something, I was afraid that was inflating the truth. Looks pretty accurate. And oh my god is that kid fast. I've watched the team since 1989, and I can't remember a guy with his speed. He will be dangerous if we can get the ball in his hands. > DeMyron Martin is listed at 6-2, 200. He looks bigger than that. And he runs hard. > The redshirt freshman OLs look strong. All of them. Burley, Peveto and Boren look stronger than last year. I didn't see who it was, but one play, a DL got tangled up with Boren, who seemed to get his feet tangled and still [deleted] off the ball. (New coaching technique?) Peveto looks really strong and technically sound. Grant Eidson looks like he's added a lot of size - much stronger. Chris Urbanus looks like a football player, not just a big guy (better shape, thicker arms). > As ALEX LIFESON said, Jonathan Lindley looked great over the weekend. He's got a lot to learn, but he looked really impressive. Big kid, great speed. Nice leaping ability and timing. Exact same report for Brandon Jones. > Bobby Chase looked pretty good. Damn he's big for a WR. In one drill, he waited for an underthrown ball, went up and over David Haynes and snatched it - showed great hands. A couple of plays later, he got downfield and used his body to shield the DB (don't remember who) from the ball. The contact knocked the DB to the ground, leaving Chase free to head to the end zone. > Ryan Kennedy might be the biggest football player I've ever seen. OK, not really, but if he's 6-5, as listed, then Chris Phillips is 5-11. Kennedy is a man. Made a couple of really nice catches. > Rico Harris looks smooth and comfortable for a guy coming off a knee injury. > Don Ieremia-Stansbury clearly has lost weight since he bulked up to play DE last year, and looks quicker. He and Ieremia-Stansbury and Avery Cleveland make the LB group MUCH faster. I'll think of more later. Rise up, Mustang Nation!
Go SMU!
I hear Bennett has really opened up the competition for all spots. There is a lot of pressure to step up and perform. I think he really means "we're going to see who wants to play".
Passing game very rough, I hope it is just early and timing is still off. A lot of freshman receivers are being looked at and pushed to show something. Early fear is we'll go back to 3 runs and a punt as running game is expected to be good with RB's we have. Appearances that Eckert and Phillips are even, I'm assuming Phillips still has edge but apparently coaches are giving all three equal shot. Foy will start, Massey unusually quiet I hope the staff helps with the tough time he's has had in his personal life. O-line basically set, as well as defense. But word is, everyone is getting a good and equal look.
Buspen, not that this is any of my business, but out of genuine concern, what is going on in Massey's personal life such that you say he is unusually quiet? Perhaps it has been posted before, but I must have missed it.
Thx.
Re:
I understand he lost his mother within the last year. Some of his friends indicated that he is unusually quiet. I was just putting two and two together.
