More than a dozen Fort Worth-Dallas radio personalities -- some from the past, some still working -- are among 2004's inductees into the Texas Radio Hall of Fame.
The inductees, announced Tuesday, also include nearly a dozen personalities from elsewhere in the state. Some are on-air personalities. Some are better-known for their programming and management skills. The inductees will be honored at a ceremony Oct. 30 at the Radisson Hill Country Resort and Spa in San Antonio.
Among the new names is Jay Randolph: Former voice of Dallas Cowboys football and Southern Methodist University basketball for KLIF in the 1960s -- and the first play-by-play announcer for the Florida Marlins in the 1990s.
(And if you remember these names, you're as old as I am!)
Also being inducted are:John Borders, known on-air as Johnny Dark, from the glory top-40 days of KLIF as well as KFJZ, KBOX and Waxahachie's KBEC.
The Charlie & Harrigan team members: There was more than one Charlie & Harrigan at KLIF in the 1960s, and those roles were played by people named neither Charlie nor Harrigan: Ron Chapman (currently with KLUV/98.7 FM), Jack Woods, Paul Menard, Jack (Murray) Auldridge, Dan (McCurdy) Patrick and Bruce Armstrong. The Chapman-McCurdy era C&H introduced the Beatles when they played Memorial Auditorium in Dallas in 1964, according to the station's Web site.
Norm Hitzges: Longtime Fort Worth-Dallas sports personality, currently heard from 10 a.m. to noon at KTCK/1310 AM "The Ticket."
Suzie Humphries: Former KVIL/103.7 FM personality whose work with Chapman on that station led some to dub her the "first lady" of KVIL.
Tom Joyner: Syndicated, Dallas-based DJ heard locally on KSOC/94.5 FM, Joyner became famous as the "Fly Jock" for the eight-year period when he did morning shifts in Dallas -- and then flew to Chicago to do afternoon shifts. Also known for his social activism and community involvement.
Ben Laurie: Longtime Texas-radio personality who has had gigs in many facets of the business, as DJ, newsman, traffic reporter and station manager. Worked for many stations in San Antonio and Dallas.
Ron McAlister: Longtime newsman, also known as Ron Jenkins, who did gigs at KLIF and KBOX.
Gary Owens: You might know him better as the velvet-voice announcer of `Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In,' but Owens did a stint at KLIF.
Charles Payne: One of the earliest voices on Dallas' KIXL, a veteran of six decades in Texas broadcasting, and the author of `Feedback: Echoes from My Life in Radio.'
Michael Spears: 40-year veteran of radio and television, in many capacities: as an announcer, writer, consultant and manager. Most recently directly in the biz as operations manager for KRLD/1080 AM.
John Tyler: Co-founder of Satellite Music Network, the first of its kind, which is now Dallas-based ABC Radio Networks.
