This is the best the Morning News could do for media day?

http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/spt/colleges/topstories/stories/080904dnspoetccolbriefs.3d0c8.html

What's even worse is that the Fort Worth paper made an effort, I'm glad I can get my info. from cowtown.

The DMN is crap. But when you're the only paper in town, you can do whatever you want. I quite subscribing to the DMN when the Dallas Times Herald folded years ago. I get *all* my SMU sports news from this site - www.ponyfans.com - and it ROCKS! :D

Careful...that's one of SMU's "Corporate Partners" you're talking about.

One thing I forgot to add, also to complain about DMN: McAllen's paper, The Monitor, had a 3/4 page write up on SMU football today with pictures on page 2 of the sports section. Part of a series of previews of TX schools, but more ink than I've seen in DMN for some time.

Whoopty-doo. Then they should act more a like a partner.

I wonder about that partnership. Most business, like a restaurant or a dry cleaner or a bank, etc., sponsor by coughing up money. Many papers are notorious for offering "support" through promises of various levels of coverage. Given what we see from the DMN, I hope SMU is getting some of that Belo moolah. Because Watkins gets less space in the paper than the guys covering the Big 12 schools (Texas? OK. Baylor? Hell no!), the little froggies and UNT. For the amount of pub the DMN gets at SMU games, they'd better be covering the coaches' salaries or something.

The "be careful" comment was tongue in cheek. I'll still welcome DMN's $$ to SMU athletics, though. Regarding a "link," the article is in the print edition of today's paper, but to see it online I think you have to subscribe to the "virtual paper" or whatever it is...it's not on the free online site. www.TheMonitor.com

we will get more coverage when we are deserving. Hopefully, this year's coverage won't be all about SMU having the longest losing streak in college football or about breaking SMU's record for most consecutive losses. Same goes for the thread about SMU banners, T-shirts, etc... When we put together a team that starts accomplishing the things TCU has, the DMN will be there to write about it.

I don't know if the DMN would notice. They're more interested in selling mass numbers of papers than they are in reporting what's going on IN Dallas. Sure, they'll hit us with 6 pages of nascar when there's a race out at TMS (which someone should show the editors is not in Dallas, or Dallas County.) Does one race on the nascar circuit merit all that coverage? No (relax, nascar fans - that's just my opinion.) It's one event on a curcuit that goes around the country. It's not the Daytona 500. But the DMN knows there will be 150K out there, and that a ton of people come to the area for the races, and that papers will be sold. As much as any paper I've ever read, I always got the sense that they were about moving papers, not reporting news.

(And I still think they should remove "Dallas" from the name, since they do a better job covering nationally than they do covering Dallas. Again, just my opinion.)

The posts are started about 10 times a year and always crack me up. Sure, I'd love for SMU to get more coverage, but why should we get it. What have we done in the last 20 years that would make people want to read about us.

And the Dallas Morning News' job is not to provide news about Dallas. It is to provide news that people in Dallas are interested in. How many SMU fans are there in the metroplex? 40,000? Compared to hundreds of thousands of the other schools. The DMN isn't biased, they're just giving their readers news on the topics they're interested in.

And as far as crying about races at TMS. Well, those have attendence of 200,000 (SMU's average plus another zero), plus a nationally televised audience of millions more. I think that deserves a few pages once a year.

For those of you out there that think the DMN isn't doing a good job, start your own paper. Report only on the happenings in Dallas (no national news) and devote most of the sports coverage to SMU athletics. Please let me know how many subscribers you have.

Many may disagree with me, but I think the DMN Sports page is one of the best sports sections I've ever come across.

Mike Damone: Were you around when the Dallas Times Herald was in existence? Now THERE was a sports page! The only thing the DMN sports pages ever had that I thought was worth a damn were Bill McClannahan's sports cartoons every Friday during football season!

Mike Damone: I agree with your arguement becasue honestly we don't deserve a bunch of puff pieces. My gripe is that the day after Media day the DMN puts a paragraph in the paper while the FW paper ran a respectable story on us. Even the Anytown Texas Monitor had a story on SMU while our hometown paper does nothing.

If you've lived anywhere other than Dallas, you'd realize the DMN has a pretty decent sports section. And I agree...this is not a publicly supported newpaper. They are going to run stories that will help sell papers. I'm sure they'd love to see SMU become another Miami and for there to be more local interest in us. Being in their backyard, we would be easy to cover if we are ever deserving of more coverage

In the interest of accuracy, I think you must have meant "SMU's average plus two more zeroes" in your parenthetical. If we were averaging 20k in the stands per home game we would not be on the bubble for being forced out of Div 1A under the new rules changes.
