Interesting Little Tech-bit

you know that JC transfer Marquis Johnson listed as a starting receiver this year for Texas Tech-sound familiar?-just realized he's the same Parade All American, National Top 20 (Bobby Burton) kid who signed with UT out of high school in Illinois in 2002. I did not know that!!!! Sounds like a nice complement to Glover, et al.

TECH-bit II------SMU sold over 1,000 tickets in one day Monday to the SMU/Tech game all of which were bought in Lubbock on the first day that single game tickets could be bought by Tech fans. Tech says their alottment is only 3,600- seems a little low although I'm sure a large number of Metroplex Tech fans will purchase tickets here. You think we can come up with 12,000 SMU fans who might bother to show up?

I'll get down on SMU attendence after we have won a couple of games. It is hard at this point to be too critical - I am a die hard but don't expect everyone to be one - most fans occasionally need the program to throw them bone in the form of a win, and we have gone hungry for a long time. It is about to change - but attendence follows perfromance not the other way around.

Hold on there, the allotment for Tech fans went down to 3,595 on Monday, as one of my Tech alum buddies bought 5 for me and some fellow SMU alums (and one UT alum who lives next door).

Will SMU vs. TT be televised...those of us out here on the Left Coast would like to see it. Otherwise, AM radio streaming internet, here I come.

My grandmother talks about listening to SMU through the 1940s in a little logging town in Lousiana (she's Methodist...it was a Methodist thing back then).

Now we both listen when we get the chance. Funny how that works.

Far as I know, none of our games are televised this year. I will also hinker down on my computer again. Bourbon dulls the pain quite well.

I'm pretty sure I saw that the Boise game will be televised by ESPN or Fox as part of the conference package.

That's the guy. Was at a JUCO in Kansas last year and didn't do much at all; was actually moved to defense for some time last year. Word is that he's a physical specimen with great hands, but needs to work on route running and technique. He'll definitely see playing time, though.

The receiver to keep an eye on this year is probably Jarrett Hicks - 6'4" 208 lb soph from Sharpstown. He should have a monster year.

Dark horse is true freshman Danny Amendola from The Woodlands. He's catching everything in sight and apparently any thoughts of redshirting him have vanished.

I'm surprised Tech would burn a redshirt on a guy like that, unless they had to. Are they that thin at receiver? I always thought Tech was one of those "automatic-redshirt-luxury" institutions.

If you're talking about Marquis Johnson, he has 3 yrs to play 3. He spent a redshirt year at JUCO rehabbing a knee, and then played 1 year. He may be somewhat raw, but I think he's too good to redshirt even if it were available.

If you're talking about Amendola, it seems the kid is just too good to keep off the field. Receiver is probably the deepest position on the team (with the possible exception of the OLine). But Leach plays 8 receivers in a game, rotating them to keep them fresh. Amendola is clearly one of the top 8. They have at least two other freshman receivers who are pretty good (including Anthony Jenkins from Ennis who was Graham Harrell's target in high school), and they'll both redshirt.

As far as it being an "automatic redshirt luxury" situation, that pretty much is the case on offense. It definitely has NOT been the case on the defensive side of the ball up until this year. Off the top of my head I can't think of any true freshmen that are likely to play on defense this year. Last year we started a true frosh at corner, middle linebacker, and had one other play a lot at defensive end.
