Cole Horton

Saw the note in today's DMN about DE Cole Horton calling it quits because of a heart condition. It said that he lost his father to heart problems, and that his brother and sister also have heart problems. It's a shame to see his career cut short, but it sounds like the only logical move.
Best of luck for a long, healthy future.

Can someone clarify whether a medically forced "retirement" like this allows his scholarship to continue so he can finish his education? Sure hope so.

SMU always honors scholarships (unlike other schools, see: Bobby Knight).

I believe what happens in his case is that we will apply for his scholarship NOT to count against our 85 allotment because it is a permanent injury, like our RB who 'retired' due to the bad back 2 years ago.

I met Cole once during his redshirt year, and he was an extremely impressive young man, who seemed passionate about the game and about the Ponies. While I'm sure he's upset to be done with football, his health has to come first.

All the best to you, Cole.

I hope he's continued to be considered a welcome part of the program. Take care of that ticker, young man.
