Postby HPPony » Wed Aug 18, 2004 8:44 pm

There is a 1982 SWC football championship ring being auctioned off on eBay. Take a look.

It has "Foster" written on the side. Could that be the name of the player? (Where can you find a roster from that year?) I was wondering if it could have been lost at some point and just ended up on eBay.

I can do you one better:

Dan Patrick reported on his show today that Lawrence Phillips (he of Nebraska football stardom and the Lincoln police blotter) recently sold one of his Big 8 championships in a Las Vegas pawn shop .... FOR $20! The shop owner then turned around and put it on eBay, pulling in $1,700 for it.

When he was drafted, he was supposed to be nearly a can't-miss prospect. Now he can't get a job in the CFL or NFL Europe. Sad.

It's not really sad, the guy deserves what's happening to him. He's probably one of the most miserable human beings in the world. So much talent and just completely wasted it because he couldn't control himself. You know a guy is rotten apple when [deleted] Vermeil wants to wash his hands of him.

My program to the 1983 Cotton Bowl game states that Blake Foster was on the 1982 championship team. He was a sophomore offensive tackle from Mesquite, Texas.

He must have left the team after that--he's not listed in the program for the 1983 Louisville game.

I checked the list of lettermen and did not find a Foster in any of those years.

I looked up the list of all football lettermen at http://www.smumustangs.com/football/history/Lettermen.pdf and there is no Foster listed that earned a letter in the 1982 season. So it could be he left the team after his sophomore year.

On the subject of memorabilia, my old dentist purchased Mark Vincent's custom SMU Mustang cowboy boots at a garage sale in Weatherford a couple of years ago.

Thanks for looking that up, Socite, in your old program. That's amazing you have one.

From time to time, there will be some pretty cool vintage SMU footall memorabilia on eBay. I try to check it out a couple of times a week.

Would love to see those custom Mustang boots!

The ring is up to $345 now, with 3 1/2 days to go. Will be interesting to see what it finally goes for.
