wildcardsnobody on the outside would pick SMU to beat Tech. But there are a few wildcards in my mind, none bigger than Chris Phillips. He has big time ability. He now has some experience under his belt and a whole offseason. He already showed some competitive fire and big game ability in the TCU game at the end of last year. What if he is the real deal and a guy who plays big in big games? I think he might be. If he is, the whole team will get a boost and the complexion of this thing could change for the better in a hurry. Foy is key too. If the new coaches get the offensive line going, you never know when you are playing at home in an opener.
I agree. Phillips played his best game last year against TCU. For a true freshman QB that was a helluva game against a pretty good team. There really may be something to Phillips being a big game player. As soon as he figures it out, he will be a special player.
Actually we have a deck of wildcards on offense. A young but seemingly talented OL with some depth, young and unknown WRs, Munlin who seems a known quantity but dinged, and the QB as you mentioned, young but with apparent talent.
If they all come up aces we may have a shot. Go Ponies!!
Beat whoever it is we are playing!! @PonyGrad
I'm with you guys, I'm excited, especially about Phillips. With his wheels and his ability to improvise, he really adds an extra element to the offense. He was thrown in the deep end last year, and he really responded well. Now that he's a year older and more comfortable, look out. He really comes of age this year - starting Saturday!
thing is, with Bartel and nearly all of our recent qbs, they needed great protection from the Oline to be effective. With Phillips scrambling and running ability, he can make plays himself when he has to. Now, if the Oline improves up to just a respectable level this year, that could mean massive improvement in the offense. Maybe it wont work that way this year because of youth, but at least as far as qb is concerned, there is no reason not to hope for big things. Heck, Matt Leinert won a national championship last year as a sophomore at USC. If the talent is there, young guys can excel at quarterback early in their careers.
