Either SMU or SJSU is gonna be 0-5. Going into the game, SMU is 0-4 (season) and 0-2 (WAC play) while SJSU is 0-4 (season) and 0-1 (WAC play). This will be SJSU's Homecoming and their first conference game before the home crowd for the 2001 season! Anyone care to make any predictions on which team will be the 'cellar dweller' after Saturday's game with an 0-5 record?

I expect this to be a very competitive game, but the 7 pts San Jose is favored by sounds about right to me.

If SOMEHOW we can manage to avoid more than 2 turnovers, we'll play them tough and probably win. I think we have more talent.
Not sure what's up with Whitaker this year. I imagine he'll rack up some yardage -- all in the second half.
The disturbing part of this matchup, is that SJSU is 0-4 against the likes of ASU, Colorado and USC.
The one common opponent, LA Tech, the Spartan offense managed 20 pts., whereas the Mustangs could only score 6 pts. The LA Tech offense basically rollled over both teams.
If both teams bring their usual game, the Spartans will cover the spread. If last week's offense shows up (while eliminating a coule of turnovers), SMU wins by 10.

I think you got this game pegged about right. If your offense can be effective, it may be safe to say our defense will not be able to stop you.
Regarding Whitaker and his lack of production, I can only say from reading the posts of others that he is no longer shooting through the designated hole and breaking free. He has been coached by the new staff to wait for a hole to open first. Needless to say, that doesn't suit his style at all. He is very explosive and short so it was advantageous for him to get through the line of scrimmage as fast as he could.
We have had a miriad of new issues with the new coaching staff. They appear to be inexperienced at this level and haven't tailored our strengths into the overall game strategy. We are very disappointed thus far in the play of the team and the new staff. Like you though, we must remain positive and supportive of the guys because they are trying.
Best of luck to you this weekend. It is a shame that one of us will drop to 0-5. Makes for a long season. Then again 1-4 isn't exactly a breakthrough, but it could be the turnaround that we are all hoping for. I think it was two year's ago that you guys were in about the same shape before you beat Fresno and went on to play pretty good ball for the rest of the season. We are pretty sure that had the transformer not blown, you would have beaten us back in 99.

Am I the only one who is sus-picious about that transformer "conve-e-eniently" blowing two years ago at San Jose? Hum-m-m. We did seem to have some momentum going into that scheduled game.
