Redshirting

I'm curious about the rules on redshirting. I know Richuel Massey played last year but was able to retain his redshirt status because of how much he played. Question is: are those limitations based on games/quarters gone by, or on the number of plays?

Was thinking about this when Phillips looked flustered last night. I'm not saying he could be redshirted, but he clearly needs to step back and soak in the new offense. Could he be redshirted this year, so we'd play Eckert and/or Romo, and then still get three years out of Phillips?

Of course, it wasn't all Phillips' fault. Had Lowery pulled in that deep ball, that could have been six points.

Phillips has played and has not been forced out due to any type of injury. There is no possiblility of redshirt (this year) nor should there be. He needs to play as much as he can if he is going to be the QB. He could redshirt next year or the year after, but I can not think of an instance with a good player where a late term redshirt, non medical, has been used. If Romo or Eckert are better it is up to the coaches to see this and make the change. It appears to me that for now anyway the decision has been made to go with Phillips for the most part. I intend to trust the coaches in making the right decision. They tend to know the players a little better than I.
