KK Rushing Thru First 3 Games of 2003

There has been a number of posts regarding the lack of production from the running back position, and that the likely reason for that was the quality of competition. It has also been mentioned that KK did not get going until we got past the non-conference schedule. That is not how I remembered it, so I looked it up.

Here were KK's numbers through the first 3 by game:

93 yds 29 carries vs Texas Tech
113 yds 30 carries vs Baylor
79 yds 20 carries vs Oklahoma State

285 yds 79 carries thru the first 3 games (3.6 yds per carry)

You can discount the Baylor yardage, but clearly we were not struggling at the running back position this time last year.

OK, so using that info, and tossing aside the Baylor game, KK ran 49 times for 172 yards, or an average of 3.51 yards per carry. Munlin has rushed 27 times for 72 yards for an average of 2.67.

Don't think that solves any arguments, but the averages are closer than I thought. (And to further confuse things, TT's defense was better last year, OSU's is better this year. So we've determined nothing.)

And, what is most key, is that we had an experienced offensive line last year.

Having said that, Foy's lack of production has been the number one disappointment for me so far this year. Here's hoping he really picks it up and looks the way he did in the spring game -- dominating.

I said you could discount the Baylor game, not eliminate it (two weeks later they soundly beat Colorado).

The point was at this time last year we all felt we had a very sound running game, even against quality opponents. This year at the same time we are talking about changing the starting RB.

Last year's line was much more experienced. As this line grows up, so will Munlin's productivity.

And don't forget...KK had a problem with fumbling also...

Twice on the opponent's 1-yard line, as I recall.
That's not meant to bash KK. But I do want to see more from Munlin .... starting Saturday.

Beat SJSU!

If this is an analysis of expectations versus results then I agree with this gist of this thread that our running game in general and Munlin's production in particular are disappointing.

Having said that, the first three games will probably not be the season's measuring stick on our running game. (Hopefully.)
