SMU's Phillips to miss Saturday's game

11:50 PM CDT on Wednesday, September 22, 2004

By CALVIN WATKINS / The Dallas Morning News

UNIVERSITY PARK – Starting quarterback Chris Phillips will miss Saturday's game against San Jose State with a strained rotator cuff in his left throwing shoulder.

Coach Phil Bennett said Phillips, a sophomore, injured the shoulder against TCU on Sept. 11, while being tackled as he attempted a pass. Bennett thinks Phillips could be out three to four weeks.

"If it goes that long, we'll look at our options," said Bennett alluding to possibly redshirting Phillips, who is 0-8 as a starter. Coaches are deciding between Tony Eckert and Jerad Romo for the starting job. That decision will be made today.

I guess now the moderators can unlock that other thread with full journalistic integrity intact. I mean for godsake, if you locked every thread where somebody posted something that you could not verify this whole damn site would have to be closed down....

Well, the thing is that the post claimed to come from the DMN website but that article wasn't posted until around 11:50 and the original post was a good 2-3 hours before this article was posted on the DMN website and even I looked all over the place and couldn't find it. So I can understand them questioning it if they did say it came from the DMN website and it wasn't there. That's why I wondered if Leopold either 1)works at the DMN or 2)knows someone that works there because the average joe wasn't privvy to that information until 3 hours later after the post.

We got our QB change wish

No wonder Phillps had trouble passing. Now our second guessing about changing QB's will be tested on Saturday night. This may actullay increase interest in the gaem.

Congrats to Leopold for getting the story first. He's obviously got a 'source' on the 'inside' at the DMN. I think he should change his name from Leopold to 'Deep Throat'!

It may be somewhere in the middle. Notice it is a strained rotator cuff not a torn rotator cuff. This type of soft tissue injury is really hard to prove or disprove. It hurts basically. Usually, you can play through strains. So let's say for the sake of argument that Coach Bennett decided that Phillips is not quite ready for prime time and would like to milk another year of eligibility for his QB. Romo and Eckert have shown that they can handle the offense for now. So, why not try to get Phillips a medical redshirt. I'm glad I read The Prince at SMU.

Coach Bennett confirmed this at the Mustang Club breakfast this morning. The injury is such that Chris can't throw over shoulder height. Evidently he got it banged up in the TCU game.

If he was hurt/injured, then why did he play against OSU?

I agree with East Stang. There is something Machevellian going on here.

Perhaps Phillips tried to hide the injury so he could play...who knows.

That's what I was thinking, PK. But you would think somebody would have noticed something in practice.

Oh well...

Not to throw conspiracies out there, but Phillips clearly could stand to improve his accuracy. We've lost the first three games with him as a starter. Now he apparently can get get a medical redshirt. Which means he can still play 3 more years at SMU.

Now, before Stallion jumps me, I agree that Phillips is clearly the best athlete on the team and he brings a dynamic to this team that it doesn't otherwise have. But we haven't won with him either. Maybe the best thing long term is for him to sit.

I have said all along that Phillips either plays or he redshirts. I am not a big fan of the rotating QB's. If we can recapture a year of Phillips' eligibility, then I am all for it.

Keep it coming, SCAMP! I agree that in the long run, Phillips might end up better off if he sits the rest of this season.
