Who Should Start: Eckert or Romo

Postby rich_alum » Thu Sep 23, 2004 9:08 am

I imagine many of you will jump on the Romo bandwagon after his touchdown during garbage time of the OSU game.........however there were many that wanted to see Eckert start after the Tech game..........C'mon Monday Morning QB's......I know you have an opinion.

I will start things off by going with Eckert. He looked good in the spring game and did lead us on a nice touchdown drive against Texas Tech in the opener. He has a stronger arm than Romo, but he does often force things.

I'll say Eckert, and for one reason: without having made the trip to Stillwater, I've never seen Romo play. However, I keep hearing from a guy on the team that Romo has a pretty rare combination of mobility, throwing ability and overall strength. I absolutely hate the idea of rotating QBs, but I'd like to see him play. Until I do, I like what I've seen of Eckert (except those two braincramp INTs in Fort Worth - should have tucket the ball and taken the sacks).

Pencil me down for a vote for Eckert.

I have never seen Romo play. Eckert did look good at times against both Tech and TCU, although didn't he throw a few interceptions at the TCU game? Romo supposedly has the ability to scramble pretty well. Honestly I Have no clue who we should go with. Does anyone want to change their prediction for a win? Whoever starts, if we win, and then do well until Phillips can play again do we replace that person with Phillips when he comes back?
The donkey's name is Kiki.

On a side note, anybody need a patent attorney?

Good, Bad...I'm the one with the gun.

Nah, I still think we win, although we do it differently. Romo is a little like Phillips in that he's a lefty who can run, but Eckert has moved the offense well at times. I think we can - and will - win with either of them.

Let's worry about the Phillips comeback when it happens. Maybe Eckert or Romo will play so well that nobody's taking the job. Maybe not - but let's hope so.

What do you want to bet Bennett runs the same type of rotation with Eckert and Romo that he ran with Phillips and Eckert. Eckert to start and Romo to come in the 2nd Qtr. then based on results the more productive gets the majority of the 2nd half. I just wish one of them would rise to the occasion quit worrying about not making a mistake (because they might be replaced by the next QB) and just go play football and establish themselves.

Good point - these guys have to be willing to make a mistake. They can't play scared.

My vote is for Romo. I've heard (defensive) players admit that somehow it's harder to prepare for a left-handed QB - there shouldn't be a difference, but I've heard some players who say there is. A lefty who can move should be even tougher.

Incidentally, who was the QB against them last year, when Pellerin caught that long TD pass? Was that Richard Bartel's farewell performance?

I'm hoping Romo starts just because I haven't seen him yet. Eckert looks like someone with experience, but I don't like some of the decision making I've seen from him. I'd like to see Romo start, and if we don't get something going, put Eckert in. What I wouldn't give to have Josh McCown back now...

Jerad Romo should start.
Both should play until one really steps forward and starts kicking tail.

Go with Romo

Postby Mare » Thu Sep 23, 2004 12:10 pm

Romo-no question! I have heard from the defense and the defensive coaches, that they take on Romo as a challenge. He has break away speed, stronger than an ox, and doens't back down. On the offensive side, he has a great understanding of the reads, an awesome arm, he's agggresive. he learns from his minimal mistakes. Coach Burns says San Jose brings the blitz, we need a mobile QB back there. We need to get on top first and take it from there. I'm tastin' a win on Saturday. Let's go with the guys "most hungry"

I admit, I like Eckert's swagger. Of course, I also haven't seen Romo play yet.

I agree with your point about needing a mobile quarterback...... But if Romo has all these great qualities, why is he in the 3rd position?

I haven't seen any receivers just blow me away yet. Good passes have been scarce from all QB's. Our best chance is with a guy with some mobility. That makes my vote Romo...I do think that Eckert has some great ability and will probably start. I have a feeling he will light up SJSU much like Bartel lit up LaTech 2 years ago. (Ok after I put my thoughts in a post I'm going with Eckert...something about a QB that can actually throw an accurate pass once in a while).

That was probably the last solid performance that an SMU QB had. It looked like our QB problems had been solved after that game. Hopefully either Eckert or Romo can really get it going and Phillips will then get a red-shirt year.

I think they should rotate QB's in the following fashion. If you score (FG or TD), you stay in for another series. If you don't score. You're out.

"And here's Jerad Romo, lining up for a 47 yard field goal - very interesting that the Mustangs would let their quarterback take this kick, but he's refusing to leave the field, so what can you do? The snap . . . and the kick is blocked! Wait - that was Tony Eckert blocking that kick! I guess he gets to play quarterback during the next series now. What an interesting turn of events."
