Coach Bennett

Coach, I owe you an apology. I readily admit that in February, I was among those who questioned why you would sign two JUCO quarterbacks. I wasn't even bright enough to see the need for one, since the reports on Chris Phillips were so positive. (Apparently I was under the impression Phillips was exempt from injuries. Silly me.)

Anyway, I come before to eat a heaping helping of humble pie. You were right to sign two. Nobody wanted to see Phillips get hurt, of course. But in years past, when we've lost a quarterback, the quality of the reserves has been .... let's say it's less than what we needed. Now I have no idea how good Eckert and Romo are, since I haven't seen either play (but I'm coming up to Dallas this weekend for a first-hand view!) And by the sound of the comments on this board, maybe the coaches aren't yet sure of exactly what they have in these two. But what I do know is that it sounds like they both have some ability. Of course they have room for improvement - we all do. But since we're always one play away from having to move to the next guy on the depth chart, I for one am thrilled that you had the foresight to sign both of these guys.

Good move, Coach. Now go kick some Spartan butt!

Guilty - I thought the same thing. I guess Coach Bennett knows more about this stuff than we do.

I still would like to know why Meeks left. Does anyone have any insight?

I was under the impression he wanted to play and was under the impression that wasn't likely here. I don't know that, but that's what I heard.

Guess he shouldn't have been so impatient! Now we need to recruit another young quarterback to take over when the jucos leave unless, of course, we recruit more jucos!

Nah, recruit a freshman QB and let him learn from the three-headed monster of Phillips/Romo/Eckert, and then work his way up the depth chart. Phillips handled it well when he was tossed in the deep end at the end of last season, but he'd be better off with more time to observe.

Good post, Hilltopper. I think there were a lot of us who wondered why he'd sign 2 JUCOs. Now we know. For all the heat Coach B has taken at times, it's only fair that someone lobs a little praise his way when it's deserved.
