Update on the injured student?

Postby MrMustang1965 » Mon Sep 27, 2004 6:43 pm

Just wondering how that student who was injured when the goal posts came down on Saturday is doing? My prayers are with him and his family.

(I searched the DMN and the SMU Daily Campus - not updated from Friday's edition! - and neither has info.)

Last I heard is 2 more days in ICU to allow the sweeling to dissapate, so the doctors can decide what course of action to take. He is still 100% concious and aware of his surroundings; and well pretty normal. I mean, as normal as a kid that got jacked in the head with a goal post can be....

Do you think the school will discipline any on the participants in this act. If not, they are open to a lawsuit. Sad, I know.

Bound to be a hot topic at the 50 yr. reunion. And he'll get to explain to his grandchildren what a "goalpost" was.

I heard that SMU PD is pushing the Daily Campus to turn over their pictures of the participants. Here's hoping they don't fold to 'the man'.

No way they should give up their pictures. Especially if they didn't run them in the DC.

If the guy wants to file a lawsuit against SMU, he'll do it regardless of whether the school disciplines any students or not. His biggest impediment to recovery will likely be the fact that he was out there doing the very thing he'd be complaining SMU failed to prevent--trying to bring down the goalposts. That kid just needs to be thankful he's not dead or a a vegetable and move on with life.

All that said, I think bringing the goalposts down was awesome, and I hope we have reason to do it again in the not too distant future.

I thought that going on the field, technically, is considered trespassing. Most schools look the other way because (A) there's too many to prosecute, (B) nothing generally happens and (C) it does wonders for morale, enthusiasm, pride, etc. (I know a buddy of mine was arrested/cited for charging on to the field once after a game.) If that's the fact, then a lawsuit would have no merit, because the school's response could be "if you weren't trespassing, you wouldn't have gotten hurt." And in the long run, wasn't he out there because he was ecstatic that his school won? I highly doubt he'll sue.

Pathetic. Even when SMU wins a football game, something happens to tarnish the victory. My heart goes out to Garrett Haake. Maybe someday the powers that be will realize that a SMU football program is simply not meant to be. Bring back baseball - for the sake of the children.

Sir Trolls a Lot, you still haven't cut that $40 Million check to the athletic department to start that baseball/softball program you've been pining for. Cut the check, raise the money, or get off this ridiculous subject. Baseball is not and has never been viable at SMU. It was a joke when we had it and we were in arguably the best baseball conference at that time.

EastStang,
What a silly argument! I know you're just messing with me though, saying that I should get off the subject of baseball because I don't have $40 million to drop. Of course, I know you've put at least that much into the football program, otherwise you'd not be on here discussing it! You're a funny guy, you light up this board. :D

When I was in high school, my economics teacher was telling me about the time he charged the field after a big win (I don't remember what school he went to). They rip the goalposts down and one of them falls right on his head and cracks his skull open. Later on, they manage to get a group of pre-med students to take a look at him, and one at a time they all poke at his head. He said everytime they touched it, he felt like he was going to sneeze.

I guess it depends on where on his head they poked him. Perhaps they should have tried up his nose...
