William Weidner has been selected as the new Weber State athletic director, university officials announced Tuesday.
Weidner emerged from a field of 45 candidates from across the nation. He has been serving as athletic director at the University of Texas-Pan American since 1998.
“I am very appreciative of having been afforded the privilege of being named as the director of athletics at Weber State University,†Weidner said. “I look forward to working with President (F. Ann) Millner, Vice President (Norm) Tarbox, our coaches, athletic administrators, student-athletes as well as all campus and community constituencies as we continue to lay a strong foundation upon which to build future successes.â€
Weidner boasts 25 years of experience as a coach and administrator. At UTPA, Weidner rebuilt a program from the depths of NCAA probation. UTPA earned full NCAA certification and tremendous growth in attendance at sporting events, ticket revenue and athletic department fund-raising during Weidner’s six-year term.
UTPA finished in the top 10 in the nation in student-athlete graduation rates above the student body average. Weidner aided student-athletes in improving overall GPA, with 51 percent earning 3.0 or higher.
“Bill is an outstanding individual with a demonstrated track record of success,†said Tarbox, vice president of administrative services and chairman of the search committee. “He will be a great addition to our Wildcat athletics team.â€
Previous to his stint at UTPA, Weidner served as assistant athletic director at Southern Methodist University. He has also served as an assistant football coach at Ohio State University, Stanford University, Murray State University, Southern Connecticut State and the University of New Haven.
“The Wildcat athletic program is among the premiere athletic programs in the Big Sky Conference,†Weidner said. “WSU student-athletes have consistently excelled in both the academic and athletic arenas.â€
Weidner will begin his work as Wildcat A.D. Nov. 1.
