Here's the news release:

The cost analysis related to the possible expansion of The University of Texas at Arlington athletic program, specifically football and women's soccer and golf, has been completed and will be released at noon today, Thursday, Sept. 30, via the UTA website at www.uta.edu/sportsexpansion. The comprehensive study was conducted by Neinas Sports Services, Inc. at the request of UTA President James D. Spaniolo.

The report, while a comprehensive view of costs and facility requirements, does not make a final recommendation. UTA will have a 30-day comment period for students, faculty, staff and alumni to give their opinion, and may also host a public forum for further discussion. Decisions are expected by the end of the calendar year.

"This report is the first step because it provides a full reality of the costs, but now it's time get a full range of views and ideas about UTA's possible sports expansion and ensure that decisions made are in the best interest of the university", said Spaniolo.

The firm's executive summary of the analysis notes that the financial commitments associated with the three sports differ greatly, noting that women's golf could begin competing in the academic year after the sport is established but women's soccer would require a one year transition and football would probably require a two year implementation period.

The report notes that UTA already has a stadium that would accommodate football and soccer but would need locker rooms, coaches' offices, a training room and other related facilities for the sports.

The analysis concludes that the total cost for UTA athletic program to include football,, women's soccer and women's golf for a five year period would range from $13,780,000 to $17,455,000, "depending on the type of facilities constructed to meet the needs of the expansion and not including inflationary increases."

The unknown, the report says, "is UTA's "ability to generate revenue, support and interest to finance the expansion."

Neinas Sports Services is a company designed to provide consulting services in sports, especially intercollegiate athletics, in areas of management, organization, television analysis and negotiation, and personnel placement. Its president, Chuck Neinas, was the first and only executive director of the College Football Association, serving from 1980 until 1997.
