Saturday Assessment - WR Recruits needed....etc...

Postby cheesepony » Mon Oct 04, 2004 9:54 am

How frustrating must it have been to be Tony Eckert and Jerad Romo on Saturday night and watch all those drops in critical situations??

We need to find some athletes who CAN CATCH the ball when it hits them in the hands!

Defense - There were some AWESOME hits delivered by the D. Wilton McCray is FOR REAL and will be something to see during the next 3 years - definite Sunday potential! Blitz package was, for the most part, pretty effective - DD Lee did a nice job getting to the quarterback; Akinyemi delivered some nice blows as well. Starting to see some glimpses of what this defense will look like the next 2 years - love the fact that so many players are in the mix!!

I'm not sure why everyone seems to think that last Saturday was a good outing for SMU. We got beat by 18 and it could have easily been worse. BSU is a class program and had their 2nd string QB playing nearly the entire 4th Qtr. They went for a low % 4th and 4 instead of kicking an easy field goal. Had this been a Leech coached team, the result would have been much worse. BSU had the class not to try to run up a score.
We are still a long way off. If we win 3 this year, look at it as building. As our guys mature, they will get better but I see no reason to change the prediciton of 2 wins being what I expect and 3 being good for this year.

Yeah, we still have a long way to go. But you said it yourself: we could have gotten crushed and only lost by 18. I honestly was afraid of a 40-plus margin. Sure, Coach Hawkins is classier than The Leech and didn't run it up, but part of it also has to be the fact that we did some things right -- not everything, to be sure (hence the result), but we did some things OK.

Cheesepony: DD Lee played? Didn't he just have elbow surgery? I saw him about a week ago with a massive rig (brace) on his arm. If he played, he's the toughest dude on the planet.
