...WHY?? Seriously, why.....?? Sell me...pretend I am average Joe Alum, graduated in the late 70's, early 80's live in Plano with my SMU grad wife and 2.3 kids, say..ages 10 - 15...kids play competitive soccer, I belong to a club, play golf, usually on Fridays - Sat....busy, busy people with church, kids, school, LIFE, was at SMU in the fun, glory times, remember the SWC..all my buds are either SMU grads or went to UT, A&M, etc.....tell me why I need to "come back to THIS football program"....why??
Because we just might beat La Tech

What SMU did against SJSU might happen again against La Tech. Settling on just one QB (if he is the right choice) could fix the scoring problem.
La Tech is not Rice; and besides the 1989 team will be there. October is the best month of the year, and that means football. See you in the stands.

I'm not sure anyone can really sell anyone on the need to come back to THIS football program. To some extent you either have or don't have a desire to be linked to your Alma Mater. Football is the most visible way to be linked. Beyond that, you hope to attract other people who either don't have an Alma Mater to link to or just plain enjoy college football. Personally, I love college football and would watch it anyday over the pros, but having said that, I love my Mustangs and long for the day we regain respectability. Monday morning at the office has a little bit to do with that too. In Dallas, and SMU as well, winning is everything. The Cowboys once again are down and damnit we aren't in a position to provide an alternative source for Football pride to the communinty. Anyway, if we were winning, we would be a hell of a good value for the entertainment dollar.

Good points, PK... Bottom line: You are-- or you aren't about SMU football. Hope you're there Hixson.

Because you graduated from SMU and it's your alma mater and you never should have left in the first place. Period.
You should be supporting SMU just like my parents did for years and years thru thick and thin...and instilling the pride of SMU in your 2.3 kids, just like my parents did with me and their peers did with their children. Some of my best memories are of going to the Cotton Bowl and watching the Mustangs play the old SWC schools. No, SMU didn't win all of those games under Hayden Fry...in fact, they lost quite a few. But I remember the comraderie of going to the games with my buddies and parents and watching Jerry LeVias, Mac White, Chuck Hixson, Arthur Whittington, etc.
Call me 'old fashioned'...but in this day and age when so many people are espousing 'family values' and spending more time with your family, don't you think this is another way that you could accomplish that AND support SMU at the same time?
There's an old Beach Boys song called "Be True to Your School". I wish more SMU alumni were.

Alright, genius. You asked a question and we answered it. If you don't like the answer, then come up with a better one. Let's see you put that sales & mktg. degree from SMU to some good use.

It has been difficult to watch the Ponies lose game after game after game. But:
it's a great stadium
the boulevard is fun
the fans that do show up are as passionate as any in the country
Division I football conveniently located in central Dallas
October evenings in Texas
a group of kids on the field working their butts off
La Tech is an entertaining team that beat Fresno State and their losses are to Auburn, Tennessee and Miami
Choice of great seats!

I will note that you didn't include an administration committed to turning the program around.

...there ya go, good points, onnn......btw, MrPony68, did you ever get that much needed dental work? Just kidding..great picture. I will play along.....I do go to some babll games, those are fun, the team seems more competitive...we send $$$$ to SMU, we used to have season tickets from 80-92, the team under Tom was fun to watch, SWC comp., exciting...but, now, man, what's the point....Boise State, who are they?, Fresno, who cares? And the team, weak...I know, new conference next year, but, a continued trend of 2-9, 1-10, 3-8 will not trip my trigger.....so far, under this Phil cat, team has gone backwards....the Stadium, yes cool, but, I sort of miss Ownby, homey, cozy, plus the team was enthused, these teams are D E A D...quite frankly, not sure whyt they haven't pulled the plug on this thing....if done, what, we upset 10,076 people? To turn it around, get people in the seats, to start, and I know this board doesn't like this, you are going to have to play OSU, OU. UT, Baylor, Tech, Mizzou, LSU every stinking year, week in week out, Tulane wil not inspire Joe Alum in Plano to come, especially if we are 1-5 going in...so, play better Non Conf, old SWCer's...hire a freakin coach, a NAME coach, this would be a NEW trend for SMU seeing as we have NEVER done this before...a Supperier type guy, someone to inspire the team AND alums! Use this $$$$$$ / influence that SMU seems to have (?) and get our arses in a better conference...the President's wife went there for crying out loud, Lamar Hunt has SOME pull, NO? La tech, BSU, Cent. Fla, UAB ain't going to do it folks, and if we are pitiful in this new league...?? That's my plan Mr. Pony57, BETTER Non Conf. (NO NTSU / ARMY / ARK. ST.), NAME coach, NEW conf........in the mantime, I think I'll save my $$$$$, have you seen the cost of college these days...?? Long Live Bill Kiely (now, that guy had passion....)

I still don't see any sales & mktg.
plan. You've only stated what you want to see and wish. C'mon. Show us what you've got upstairs in the brain department. If you've got a degree from SMU, you should have something to show for it!
(Yeah...I got the dental work done!

And exactly what NAME coach would come here? Yeah, Yeah...I know money talks, but no one, including any one of the Hunts, has stepped up to offer the big bucks for a NAME.

you ask, "so.......just exactly what name coach would come HERE?" You say it as if SMU is "unworthy" of a name caoch? Your e-mail "vibe" seems to suggest we don't deserve a name coach, or CAN'T do it? Right? Am I understanding your vibe / point correctly? If so, then what's the point of all this? Are you saying we suck? Are you saying we need to give up? Are you saying we don't deserve better than repeated 2-9 seasons, year after year, after freakin year? If so, then Phils' fine, love em, great guy, tries hard, but dont' compalin about 10,564 in the stands to watch a 2-6 SMU squad grapple with La tech. Don't [deleted] about the big old mean NCAA requiring we meet a MINIMUM attendance requirement. Being in ESPN's bottom 10 is cool............current PLAN ain't working folks, and I'm afraid the NCAA / SMU Admin / Joe Fan is going to make your decsion for you....D-1AA.....oohhhhhhh, but this is the reality, until we decide to get seriuos about this, TODAY! Step Up, hire a name, go for it, get what we NEED.....long live Bill Meek.
