Richardson, Allen Return to Practice for Bulldogs

RUSTON - The Louisiana Tech coaching staff got some good news this week as quarterback Donald Allen and running back Shelton Richardson both returned to practice after missing time due to injuries.

Bulldog head coach Jack Bicknell said Allen, who started three games for the Bulldogs before suffering an injury in the first quarter of a 42-17 loss at No. 8 Tennessee, has looked good in practice. However, Bicknell is still uncertain as to when the New Orleans native will be ready to contribute.

"He is to the point that he can throw with only slight discomfort," Bicknell said. "The big question with Donald is how he'll respond when he takes a hit. He seems to be getting better every day and he will travel with us this weekend."

When asked if Allen could see playing time against SMU if needed, Bicknell wasn't ready to make a commitment.

"I'm not sure," Bicknell said. "We will just continue to see how he does and go from there."

Richardson was also cleared to practice this week after not seeing any practice or playing time since he broke his leg in the Bulldogs spring game in April. The Grenada, Miss., native was thought to be lost for the season but has progressed nicely since his surgery.

"We just wanted to get Shelton back on the field and work him back slowly," Bicknell said. "He still doesn't look 100 percent when he runs. He's gotten some reps this week in practice. He needs to get back into game shape and shake the rust off."

Although no definitive time table has been set for Richardson's return to the field, Bicknell said he hoped the 6-foot-2-inch, 235-pounder could be ready by the Hawaii game on Nov. 6.

Junior running back and Doak Walker Award candidate Ryan Moats, who ranks third in the country in rushing yards per game at just over 155, has also made a lot of progress for the Bulldogs this week and is now listed as probable for Saturday's contest.
