How many Craig Welchs' does our program really have...

Postby HixsontoLeVias » Fri Oct 15, 2004 10:13 am

or, for those of you from South Garland (long live Kato), how many "paint your face Red & Blue for the Hawaii game, I have a Rongea Hill tattoo on my left forearm, I have actually been to Ruston, 0-10, 1-9, 2-40, I'm going to be there going absolutely, passionately NUTS!", how many fans / alums / supporters like this do we have? 15? 49? 117? Next category, and probably our biggest category...how many "Mustang Club sticker on their car because it's a "status symbol", retired guy with nothing else to do on a Saturday (I sent 2.3 kids through this place, I better get something out of it..), season ticket holder, startched shirt, pressed kackis, no sweat on his lightly creased SMU hat, complains through MOST of the season....how many of these folks do we have? 1200? 3450?, 5000? Students, who come to the games, with at least ONE piece of SMU garb on...750? 1000?...So, right now, MAX fan base is what, 4,000 - 5,000?.....My question, how do we create more Craig Welchs'? How do we get more Mustang Club sticker on car guys to the games? Maximize the student population? Is a continued string of 3-8, 2-9, 1-9-1, 4-7 seasons going to take us from a base of 5000 to 25,000? Will UAB / Tulane / Tulsa excite Joe Alum in Plano to start coming? Will it truly take succesive BOWL SEASONS to take us to a level a). acceptable to the NCAA and b). profitable to SMU?? How long will that take? Can we wait that long? Is there ANY sense in going Independent and scheduling OU / UT / Mizzou / LSU (ie: fill up your stands, make some $$$, interest to the "regular alum / fan")? I just don't see this thing working....endless 2-9 seasons VS. Ruston State and Fresno doesn't trip the "non Craig Welch (basically, our base...)" trigger.....drastic times call for drastic measures....all this "Jerry Lewis voiced" hey gang, meet ya at the game sunshine from the 97 folks on this forum does not a viable program make.....what to do? What to do? Long Live Gary Hammond.

If only SMU had more like Craig Welch....

re: How many Craig Welchs' does our program really have...

This may be a good time to say "AMEN".

More Craig Welch's is exacty what SMU needs!

If SMU had more Craig Welch's the stadium would be full every week.

Craig Welch has brought so many fans to SMU.

For example, at the SMU/La Tech game tomorrow there will be 8 season ticket holders, and 38 other people from Special Delivery as a direct result of the efforts of Craig Welch spreading the "Gospel of SMU".

Craig is relentless in his efforts to get people to SMU games whether it is football, basketball, or even women's volleyball. (yes he has several going to the womens's volleyball game tomorrow)

If every fan worked as hard as Craig to just bring someone new to every game.....we would be half way there.....because once people get a taste of the BLVD, the new stadium, the family fun, the pretty sights......many of them want to come back. (Thats what happened to me!)

SMU has a real ambassador and true loyal friend in Craig M. Welch!

I think I may be a combination. Granted, I would prefer to walk into Ford Stadium and be surrounded by thousands wearing blue and red mardi gras beads, people wearing horse (pony) masks and the like. Alas, I'm sure I've worn khakis and a polo to the last three SMU football & basketball games I've been too. Oh, and I have my Mustang Club sticker on my SUV as a status symbol...right next to my other status symbol that says LSU Dad

He is truly the most loyal guy I know. Because of Craig, I have seen every SMU game this year & I have had a blast watching them. The Ponies are EXTREMELY lucky to have a guy like him.

Thanks Craig!
