What Would Make People Believe Again?

Here is my list.

1) Fire Bennett, and go after a big name. Although Sir Trolls is sometimes mean-spirited, I think he may be onto something with Switzer.

2) Make SMU more conducive to positive media coverage. Alumni should push the DMN and Ticket to hire graduates and do specials on OUR TEAM.

3) Move the Administration to eliminate academic hurdles. This is difficult because it takes on many faculty members who have made a living trashing the program (as the DMN Adami story reveals).

4) Stop talk of switching conferances. Hard to build a fan base when we are so antsy. We should concentrate on winning the WAC. If we could begin to beat Fresno, we would be a lot better.

WE CAN WIN!!!

My list

1) Stop allowing stupid or (really) fat people to post on SMU message board.

2) Change the stadium music. I want to hear some decent freaking music. NO MORE "WHO LET THE DOG's OUT!" You may well call me Epicurean, but I would prefer something a little more refined.

3) RAISE THE ACADEMIC STANDARDS: Our players suck so bad, that we might as well join the Ivy League. I don't know, I've heard Dartmouth is pretty good this year. WE WILL FINALLY BE THE HARVARD OF THE SOUTH.

Forget for a moment the fact that Coach Bennett deserves our support, and even more, to stay at SMU. The administration/board isn't going to buy him out just so they can convince folks that it's worth MORE money to sign his replacement.

Media outlets (by that I mean the DMN - the Ticket wouldn't know what "media" means) don't do specials because of "push" from alums. They do stories that they think will SELL newspapers. If they suddenly decided there was a massive fan base here who wanted to read nothing but rodeo, nascar and ice-fishing, you can bet you'd see three silly country boys on the front of the sports section. Improved coverage will come with interest, which will come with winning.

The conference move is a done deal. Read a newspaper.

It is ridiculous to say that Bennett has done as well a job at SMU as Barry did at OU. I think you know that. Barry won national championship and dominated, and despite the crazy talk on this board we need a coach who will bring in big-time recruits.

1) SMU's athletic department can't afford a top level coach. Anyone who insists we should sign (enter marquee name here) doesn't understand the budget.
2) Dallas is a major media market, and corporate media organizations (particularly those with a publicly traded parent) aren't going to concentrate on a demographic as narrow as DFW SMU alumni and students.
3) The University’s Administration doesn't dictate recruiting restrictions; the Board does -- talk to them. Although, their policy is to phase out the restrictions slowly over time, so I doubt they’ll take up much of your time.
4) I would suspect most alumni are excited at the prospects of playing regional schools -- and they should be. It's a lot of fun to drive or take a puddle jumper to road games for a weekend out of the area.

eric dickerson running out of the tunnel in ford stadium AROUND that stupid inflatable helmet.

but in the meantime, i'll take:

recovering the ball inside the five yard line and coming away with at least a field goal.

or better yet:

consistently competitive games like TT and SJSU, which both seem like a lifetime ago now. losing is one thing, but the flat out lack of being able to compete, age and maturity of the players notwithstanding, has taken all of the wind out of my red and blue sail.

I'll take Bennett saying we're going to a bowl game in 2 or 3 years like
Forrest Gregg, and company including Rossley did around 1989. That set
the expectations.

Granted, we didn't quite make it in 92 with a 5-6 year, but it was a couple
of plays here, and there to 6-5 or 7-4. We beat Houston that year
scoring 40+ plus points on them after they scored 90+ on us 3 years
earlier.

I don't think Bennett set an EXPECTATION of winning at least 1 game this
year.
