Apparently, many on this board are not the only ones who thins Bennett's days are numbered...

SPORTSLINE.COM:
Mustangs report: Inside slant Oct. 20, 2004
The temperature of coach Phil Bennett's chair went up another 30 degrees or so Saturday with a 41-10 home loss to Louisiana Tech.
He's unquestionably on the hot seat, and he might not survive the burn.
The Mustangs dropped to 4-27 in three seasons under Bennett. Worse, they don't seem to be showing any improvement.
He was asked about his job security after the game.
"It's out of my hands, and I don't run scared," Bennett said. "I don't think about it. (Athletic director) Jim Copeland and I talk about things, and I'm sure he's not pleased, and I don't blame him, but I'm in this thing for the long haul."

Doesn't seem like an "inside slant" to me. Just a blurb they concocted with a strategically placed sound bite.

Or a blurb they swiped from the DMN, since I highly doubt CBSSportsline covers many of our games in person.

Hell, I've heard more inside slant on this board, and there's precious little of that here.

Hey guys, I'm just bringing you the coverage that's out there...frankly, I find it refreshing to actually see that someone even cares enough to cover SMU Football. ESPN and CNNSI include completely irrelevant stories on their team pages for SMU.
Also, I hadn't heard that quote anywhere else...if you don't care to read it, don't click on the thread...

Wasn't jumping on you...just annoyed that a recylcled quote from a rather dated story a few days before becomes insider news from that bastion of reliable news: CBS.
My apologies.

The club seating emptied at halftime (except for yours truly). Several around my seating departed with statements similar to that from the DMN. Specifically, no signs of improvement over 2 1/2 years. Time for Copeland (finally) and Bennett to go.
Just reporting the news, however, my sentiments are not very far removed if at all (at least I stayed).
Basketball season cannot start soon enough for me.

I was hoping someone would catch that. I thought about capping RATHER or maybe inserting some parentheses but I had faith in the keen eyes of some Ponyfans viewers so I decided to see who might catch it. Felicitations.

And the steward can always bring a little ice for the refreshments, and we can request that the band play " Nearer My God To Thee."

You guys are crazy! I stayed the whole game also,I see no need to let them be out alone. Coach Bennett is not going anywhere and I pray he gets a few wins by the end of the year. The kids do work hard it'll come. As far as Dan Rather is concerned he lied once before so making up stories is his character if you want to say he has any

Frankly I am concerned about the apparent lack of improvement, especially in the offensive and defensive lines, the LB position and to some extent the QB and RB positions are understandable,
BUT, even given all that, we do not have a fair basis for comparison to a real program until two more recruiting classes have made their way to the hilltop and we have a full complement of upperclassmen. Despite it all, we need to have two more seasons before making any rash decisions.

Why is it hard to understand the lack of "improvement" in the lines? They are both dominated in the two deep by sophomores, redshirt freshmen and true freshmen and most of the opponent's lines have two deeps dominated by upper classmen. Fifth year seniors in LaTech's case. It's harder than hell to live through this rebuilding process, but it is going to take time...there is no way around it no matter who the coach is. The only thing I know to do is to keep going to the games and let these KIDS (18, 19 & 20 year olds) know we support their efforts.
Now someone is going to point out how great so and so team is doing with a freshman RB or QB...yeah they have one or two great freshman players, but they are surrounded by upperclassmen. 85 of our players are sophomores or younger...even if we have one or two really great ones, they are surrounded by only their young peers.
