It will come out in the wrongful termination case that Neuheisel's firing had nothing to do with the Washington athletic department office pool, and had everything to do with Barbara Hedges resentment toward Neuheisel for interviewing with the 49ers.

Hedges was PISSED that he flew to San Francisco without her permission, and was looking to bury him; she chose this BS excuse. For God sake -- the office pool was set up by the University's NCAA compliance officer.

Washington is a loser for the first time in a long time, and the folks in Seattle have tried to blame all their problems on Neuheisel (a little like the Dolphins' coaching staff and player personel director blaming Ricky Williams for their sorry team).

Keep in mind most reporters are lazy, and use PR releases to structure their stories --- releases that come from a biased source. In this case, they came from Hedges.

NCAA clears Neuheisel, extends UW's probation

SEATTLE (AP) - Former Washington coach Rick Neuheisel was cleared of wrongdoing by the NCAA Wednesday for gambling in a college basketball pool, but the university had its probation extended two years.

Washington's NCAA probation - initially imposed because of men's basketball recruiting violations - now runs until Feb. 9, 2007. The school was also reprimanded for failing to monitor the football program.

Thomas E. Yeager, chair of the NCAA's Committee on Infractions, said that Neuheisel avoided punishment because the school's compliance officer had written memos mistakenly saying that participation in gambling pools was allowed.

"Sports wagering is a problem that continues to threaten the well-being of student-athletes and coaches and the integrity of intercollegiate athletics," Yeager said. "If not for unique and unusual mitigating circumstances in this case, the outcome certainly would have been different. This case should not be interpreted in any fashion as a softening of the NCAA's antigambling position."

Neuheisel coached four seasons at Colorado before compiling a 33-16 record with the Huskies, including a Rose Bowl victory and a No. 3 national ranking.

He was fired in June 2003 after his participation in the gambling pool came to light.

If memory serves me, didn’t the NCAA place some restrictions on Neuheisel while he was at Washington for infractions he committed while at Colorado?

Let me first say, I have not thrown in the towel on Bennett.......Coach Bennett could still make it work here.....And I am pulling for Coach Bennett to turn things around.......BUT

Ya think Rick Neuheisel would really come to SMU?

I wouldn't have thought he would even consider SMU?

Lets not debate whether he could/should..... but would he?

If Bennett didn't work out, I would think if SMU could get Neuheisel that would be pretty freaking sweet!

I doubt SMU would be getting "shhhlacked" by the La Techs & Rices for long if Neuheisel was on the Hilltop.

But thats just a "pipe dream" isn't it? I just don't think he would come.

How much would a guy like that make compared to Bennett?

NEW YORK -- Former University of Washington football coach and current CSTV: College Sports Television college football analyst Rick Neuheisel, who was cleared today by the NCAA in a case which led to his firing from Washington in 2003, made his first comments regarding the NCAA announcement live, exclusively on CSTV: College Sports Television (www.collegesports.com) this afternoon.



Within a CSTV Special Report originating from the CSTV studios in New York, Neuheisel, an analyst on the network's Crystal Ball presented by XBOX and a contributor to Sunday Morning Quarterback, spoke with Seth Davis, host of Crystal Ball Presented by XBOX, and Brian Curtis, senior editor of CSTV's CollegeSports.com.

Reaction to NCAA announcement:

"I'm pleased that the NCAA has finally come to the conclusion that I didn't violate any of their rules."

"The important thing is to realize that, not only did they (NCAA) not impose any penalties on me...but also, they came to the conclusion that I did not violate any rules, which is the way I had felt all along."

"I'm not surprised. I felt this way all along. The surprising thing is how long these things take, but if you're going to get the right decision, you can take as much time as you need, I guess."

Addressing the Prospect of Coaching again: "My hope is that someone will see this as vindication and that they will give me an opportunity. I think that, in the past, I've shown that I can do the job, and do it well."

"I was bitter a year ago...I'm really champing at the bit now. I know I'm hungry to do it again. I yearn to get back on the sidelines, so I'm hopeful I will get that opportunity."

"I like new challenges; I'm eager to try something...it has to make sense. In respect that I can help them (a particular school), and so forth."

How He Will Be Received in the College Ranks:

"I think that's entirely impossible to predict. I think everybody's going to have their own opinion. Fortunately, you only need one (job)."

Looking Back At The Ordeal: "You learn who your friends are. I think that may be the most valuable lesson."

"I'm very thankful to those who were so supportive to my family; it means a great deal to me."

In four seasons at the helm at Washington (1999-2002), Neuheisel accumulated a 33-16 record and finished first or second in the Pac-10 each season. His 2000 team defeated Purdue in the Rose Bowl and finished third in the country. During his four seasons as head coach at Colorado (1995-98), Neuheisel compiled a 33-14 record, with two of his teams finishing in the Top 10. All told, Neuheisel guided Washington and Colorado to seven bowl appearances in eight seasons, and was a perfect 3-0 at Colorado.

At least two points:

- Neuheisel dumped Colorado, which isn't a bad job VS Washington and he tried for the 49'ers job before they gave it to Erickson, who may not last in SF. Therefore, after his initial success at turning around one of the worst programs in College FB, he would be gone. Recruits would know that as well.

Phil is our coach, but I have two other observations. First, game day coaching is still TBD and, second, what any high profile Coach wins consistently with his assistant coaches. So Phil needs more out of his staff and any future coach (2006 at the earliest, if at all), should be judged by the staffs he has created and has access to.

Also, realize that RN has committed Recruiting violations everywhere he has been. Colorado was placed on probation after he left, and Washington had some violations as well.

The guy wants to be a pro coach anyway, he is off to the NFL.
