Eckert and Romo to play Saturday

UNIVERSITY PARK - Coach Phil Bennett said starting quarterback Tony Eckert and backup Jerad Romo will play Saturday night at Fresno State. Bennett said Romo will see time because of his mobility against the blitz.

Basketball freshman will miss a month
UNIVERSITY PARK - Freshman forward Derrick Roberts will miss a month with a sprained left MCL. He injured the knee five minutes into practice Wednesday. Roberts said condensation on the Moody Coliseum floor cause him to slip.

Roberts, who wore a brace and was on crutches Thursday, said he expects to miss two games.

Briefly ...
Caleb Peveto will start at left guard over Bryan Turner at Fresno State. ... Charles Akinyemi has regained the starting job at cornerback and will start over Brandon Jones.

Hey I say we give Ashton Nixon a shot at Musical Quarterbacks-everybody else has had a shot-he couldn't do too much worse that what we've seen anyway. Seriously, Bennett's use of QBs is almost comical-has he gone with one QB for more than 4 games in 3 years? This is a serious question.

It is unbelievable that after 7 games, we don't have a QB who can step up and take the starting job. Is Fresno only going to blitz when Romo is in the game? One has to wonder what would have happened had we been able to entice Dane King to come to SMU instead of Baylor.

The basketball program must be snakebit! How many of our top freshman seem to get injured before they ever play for SMU and then never are able to play to their full potential. Willie Davis, Hopkins and now Derrick Roberts. Hopefully this injury is not too severe.

I think that Tate Wallis started the first 6-7 games Bennett's first year, and Bartel didn't get in until the La. Tech game. I do remember then that many people were shouting about Bennett's inability to see that Tate was not the QB for our program, it appears he has gone too far the other direction now. If he is switching QBs again, hopefully he won't make the same mistake he made at Rice when he changes them out.

On a side note, anybody need a patent attorney?

We do have a starting QB: Eckert. All this says is that Romo will play. It doesn't say how much. Until we're blowing up scoreboards with 40-plus points a game, I don't see a change of pace (as long as it's not a super-quick hook) as a bad thing.

Fear not, PS - Roberts will be fine!
