Bob Toledo anyone?

Think about it. He is an amazing recruiter and has recruited Texas both when he was at UCLA and Texas A&M. He was able to recruit some of the best classes in the nation while at UCLA and UCLA is a program that does not admit partial qualifiers and almost never recruits JCs (last year was an exception). When they recruit against the rest of the PAC-10, they have the toughest admission standards aside from Stanford. He did have a 20 game winning streak at UCLA and had the Bruins ranked in the top 10 for three straight years. UCLA does not pay much, I think around 500,000 so we could afford him. Solid coach, exciting offense, looking for a job and might be willing to coach in the WAC.

I like your thinking. I think he is certainly more qualified than Bennett and has experience at a program similar to ours.

Surely, you jest.... or is that joust? Either way, Big Bob was a flash-in-th-pan and he won't be back. Anyway, we've got a coach.

If we're going for an older ex-Pac 10 coach, it should be Bruce Snyder. He took Cal into the top 10 and Arizona State within :20 of a national championship.

Granted Toledo had a spectacular 20 game win streak... outside that win streak, UCLA was pathetic. If you ask UCLA grads, they won't give Mr. Toledo high marks.

An assistant coach from a major program who recruits real well in Texas. Where have I heard that before?

Actually he was a head coach at UCLA for six years.

I like Bruce Snyder but players have never liked him. He is going to take over the UNLV job when Robinson retires at the end of the year.

The thing about UCLA fans, they loved Toledo during that 20 game winning streak but he ran into some bad luck and when Pete Carroll came to town and turned around SC, he fell from their graces. UCLA fans have never liked their coach. They hated Donahue who was a great coach and now they hate Dorrell. If you coach any sport at UCLA and your name is not John Wooden, you will not be liked.

I just thought it was an intresting name that has head coaching sucess at a BCS level with ties to texas who is looking for a job. Who also has had to deal with an administration who places academic restrictions on their athletes

Bob Toledo?? Get the f*** outta here.

This is the guy who ran UCLA into the ground and got fired before the team's Las Vegas bowl game in 2002. His 2nd and 3rd season he went 10-2 both years, after taking over for Terry Donahue. His last four years at UCLA he was 24-22. Boy, he must have recruited some strong talent there. Two seasons later and UCLA still hasn't recovered. While Toledo was at the helm, USC was building the talent base that might win them back-to-back national championships.

And his A&M days?? You realize you're talking about R.C. Solcum's Offensive Coordinator.

All this talk about a new coach is insane. Coach Phil will finish out his contract here.

So Bob Toledo is a terrible coach but Bennett is not? I will put Bob Toledo's resume up against Bennet's every day of the week and twice on Sunday.

I think at this point, you have to bring in a new head coach. Bennett has taken the program backwards, but people here still defend him? His coaching ability is defintely in question, we are getting blown out every time we line up! Folks- that is coaching when you get right down to it! He admittedly said the talent level was the best he has had at smu- and what did it produce for him 1 win! Pathetic! Can we please move on! Bring in a name coach! Somebody or anybody is better than the "The great Phil Bennett" and whoever the clown is that is suggesting the people against Bennett are from TCU! Puuuuuuuuuuulllllezzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

Wake up- SMU Football has never looked worse and Phil Bennett has been in control for over three years! By anyone's standards he sucks!
Phil step down and do everyone a favor!

It won't be three years until this December, and I don't think most people on this board are defending Bennett they are only doing one of two things. First they are simply restating what the AD and Prez have said several times, and that is that they understand the time required to build this program, and that he will have the time he needs i.e. he will be here next year, and only after that will he be reevaluated and either offered an extension or not. Second, they are trying to point out that simply hiring a new coach will not change anything at THIS university. Unless administrative changes are made to allow us the chance to truly compete no coach will do substantially better. They might win a few more games, but we will still never be bowl eligible or be able to compete for even a conference title, we will consistently be a 3-4 win team a year which is hopefully something no one on this board can be happy with.

It is my own opinion that while everyone is certainly welcome to express their desire for a new coach, and who that should be it, it seems counterproductive to me if those same people are not working to inform the administration of their distaste for our present situation, and actively communicating with alumni in an effort to raise the money to buy out our current coach, and to hire the name coach they desire. Again, that is just my opinion, which are like anal spinchters most people have them, unless they have a tube and a colostomy bag. If that is the case the rectum is sown shut, or so I've been told.

UTEP has been ugly BUT look ! they have won games........ wins will do a world of good.
Mustangs have talent, sound coaches but are lacking that something which gets you over the hump.
I will always support the Mustangs but they have been ugly, are Ugly and still Ugly, for now.......... I look forward to the days when they can win any game on the schedule.
