Hot topic on the Dallas airwaves

Postby LA_Mustang » Thu Nov 04, 2004 1:25 pm

As you would expect, the DMN story about former players being embarrassed by the state of SMU football today is getting airtime on both ESPN 103.3 and The Ticket. I hope some of you were listening to Norm’s last segment around 11:40. It may have been the best radio discussion in recent memory about SMU football. Norm usually has a pulse on the local scene and he basically said what many of us have preached for some time, our problems run much deeper than one coach. But he did say unless our team shows some sign of life these last few games Bennett is gone. A couple of callers were saying that Copeland needs to go and we need to drop to D-II. It was some interesting sports talk.

It is pretty sad that it takes an article like this for SMU football to even get mentioned on Dallas radio. Does Bennett still even have his weekly chat with Norm - sponsored by Bob's Chop House - MOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!

I overheard some players leaving Ford this morning, they said there was some kind of emergency meeting of the Athl. Dept. and they ran out the guys that were lifting.

Does anyone know if something is going on or maybe just damage control over the DMN article.

There was no sign of dissention at the Coffee with Coach function this morning. In fact, I think Bennett certainly and Copeland to a degree went on the offensive about the article.

For those who couldn't make it, it appears as though the Board of Trustees and President Turner are addressing some of the admissions and JUCO issues we've all hashed over again and again. It's not for general dissemination yet, but suffice to say, they're working to minimize our remaining restrictions.

Isn't posting it on the internet "general dissemination"?

Yes. That's why I didn't say specifically what was in the works. It's a situation that needs to be handled with some sensitivity, and as PonyFans, we're not exactly known for being subtle.

If you want to find out, just ask around, talk to someone in the Athletics Dept., or make it to the next Mustang Club event.

These would not be SMU fans. These would be trolls. Doesn't matter, Gerald Ford got that guarantee when he signed his check. However, I guess the NCAA could have a hand in it if we don't make substantial progress soon.

Don't despair--the NCAA will only force us down to Div 1AA. Look at the bright side--we'll have the nicest stadium in that division.

At least we are getting some serious coverage. This will be positive when we do our search for the next coach. The Ticket did not fun of us, they actually talked about our futility.

Makes sense. SMU would be the 'flagship' of the conference with these teams to play: Sam Houston State (currently ranked #4 in the nation in Div. 1-AA), Stephen F. Austin (currently ranked #9 in the nation in Div. 1-AA), Texas State University (that has delusions of grandeur of moving up to Div. 1-A), Northwestern State University (in Natchitoches, LA), McNeese State University (in Lake Charles, LA), Nicholls State University (in Thibodeaux, LA).

Thats not what I heard.

I heard that the Chalk Talk meeting was extremely heated today.

Are you claiming there was no heated discussions today with tempers & emotions near the explosion level at the morning coaches coffee?

It was heated, but it was not directed directly at Coach Bennett. Most of the discussion had to do with what needs to change with regards to the administration/faculty to pull their heads out of their [deleted] so that this program has a chance to succeed.
