Mack Brown Earns Grudging Respect

Postby Stallion » Sat Nov 06, 2004 11:11 pm

sure the guy has been completely dominated by OU much as Bobby Bowden was dominated Miami but geez the guy is something like 28-1 in the Big 12 after the OU losses. You got to give him a little respect for pulling his team off the mat year after year and beating just about everybody in a rugged conference like the Big 12. Tonite 35-7 turns into 56-35. Several times UT has come back from big deficit-at the very least his team rarely quits on him. And while I'm giving grudging respect Cedrick Benson who was a very soft, tip-toer the last two years has really turned into a bruising running back with 5 TDs last nite. Mack might not be the greatest coach in the world but if he were still in the SWC for the last 4 years he would be 31-1 with 4 straight championships. Bob Stoops is the undisputed champion of the Cotton Bowl but he's been known to lay some big time eggs in upsets by A&M(2002), the two upsets by OSU, the upset by KSU and the egg laid against LSU.

i'm a dual SMU/UT fan and went to the game tonight. wow. what was so sweet was after OSU was up 35-7 toward the end of the second quarter, UT marched down and scored in the last 2 minutes to make it 35-14 at half. knowing that UT would get the ball first in the second half, i remember thinking (to myself only) that if the horns scored a touch on the first drive, they would win the game. i think mack brown is a really, really good coach. maybe not stoops or paterno in his earlier years or bear bryant, but the guy is a winner.

yeah but didn't Bear Bryant lose something like 10-12 straight bowl games. And Stoops regularly blows games he is expected to win by 10 points. If it is true that Mack Brown can't coach then I guess it just about proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that the team with better talent wins 90-95% of the time. You can't have it both ways.

Let UT playOU in Nov.

Postby Sam I Am » Sun Nov 07, 2004 7:40 am

Brown builds momentum int he course of a season. He used to lose a pre-season game bnefore he played OU. Post-OU, he is almost unbeatable. Maybe Texas needs to schedule OU later in the season. The unexpected part of the OSU game was the passing effectiveness of Vince Young. What a game!

How about that tu touchdown before the half? I thought you had to get the ball to cross the goal, not just come close! This isn't horse shoes!

Are you talking about our game with Tulsa. If so, the replay showed that the Tulsa kid did eventually cross the goal line on his way over to their sideline, sort of like an after thought...that should have been a penalty for unsportsman like conduct...either that or some SMU player should have run up and rung his bell before he casually strolled into the end zone.

A smart move

Postby Sam I Am » Sun Nov 07, 2004 10:20 am

The TV replay confirmed that the UT player stuck the ball over the goal loine pylon before he wetn out of bounds. The TV announcers commented about what a smart move he had made. YOu can hate the Horns, but you can't beat them unless you are a Sooner.

"YOu can hate the Horns, but you can't beat them unless you are a Sooner"

Then how come the Horns have not won a National Championship in over 30 years?

With one of the biggest athletic budgets in the country, one of the biggest schools in the country(and thus alumini base), with some of the highest paid coaches in the country, some of the biggest staffs in the country, one of the biggest stadiums in the country, in one of the top football recruiting states in the country, shouldnt the Longhorns be like, maybe winning a National Championship every 20 years or so?

I think you are wrong, somebody is beating the Longhorns besides the Sooners!

1970 was a long time ago!
