1948 SMU Entire Football Team & Coaches Autographed Hat On E-Bay.......A Piece Of SMU History
This is a one of a kind must have collectors item for any SMU fan. This hat was given to all the members of the Southern Methodist University Football Boosters Club in the 1948-49 championship football season. On the train trip home from an away game that year, one of the members of the booster club passed this hat around to be autographed by the entire team.
Nearly everyone on the team and the coaching staff signed, including SMU’s star running back, Doak Walker, who would go on to win the Heisman Trophy later that year. He then went on to lead the Detroit Lions to two NFL titles and was named to the All Pro team 4 times and to the NFL Hall of Fame.
The hat is also signed by Kyle Rote, the stand out running back and runner up in the 1950 Heisman Trophy voting, who would go on to be a star receiver with the New York Giants where he won four Conference titles and one NFL title.
Also signing the hat was Bob Folsom, co-captain of the team along with Doak Walker, who would go on to be the Mayor of Dallas, TX.

I've got one of those. In fact, until this was posted, I had forgotten about it. Thanks.

VERY COOL! I have been looking for anything with the great Doak Walker's signature on it.

Somebody needs to buy this and then donate it to Heritage Hall. It would be a shame for this to be in someone's private collection.

Heritage Hall is a joke! If this item were donated to HH, it would go into mothballs like so many other items and memorabilia have done. There's a storage unit just filled with items donated by SMU faithful to HH that are just collecting dust. It's terrible the way the university is treating these donations and contributions.
Maybe Calvin Watkins could do a story about it, too?
I'd rather this be in someone's private collection where it will be treated with respect than at HH where it will be just tossed aside.

Just send 'da money.
Heritage Hall is just like so many other projects at SMU. The plan is great, the donations are there, but the money is missing. They just do not have available funds to complete heritage hall.
What a great idea and plan to collect these items and put them on display at Ford. Maybe when we start winning 10 games a year, a few bowl appearances and full stadium, we will have the funds to complete Heritage Hall and the meeting rooms in Ford.

Why wasn't $$$ designated for HH along with the rest of Ford Stadium and the sports complex when Gerald Ford made his contribution? Was HH just an 'after-thought'? I'd love to send "da money"...how do I know it will be used for HH and not for some other project?

donations to the athletic department can be designated to be used in a specific form or fashion.

Unfortuantely, that's what happens when everything is perceived as broken.
