Bennett still doesn't get it that his 2 point conversion attempt was stupid. In SMU notes at DMN, he is still defending the decision. Coach- Just admit you screwed up

He said that with the time on the clock, he figured Tulsa would get three possessions, in which case the strain on an offense to get two touchdowns. As conservative as we got offensively in the second half (mix in a play-action pass!), I'm not sure I still disagree. I did when the play happened, but now I can see his side, too -- difference of opinion, more than clear-cut right and wrong.

At this point, does it matter? Last I checked, we still won the game.

Problem is, the basis for Bennett's opinion is still wrong. He wanted to put strain on the Tulsa offense to get two touchdowns? OK, a two-point conversion would do that. BUT SO WOULD ONE POINT.

A 13-point lead would have required two Tulsa touchdowns. A 12-point lead would have required two Tulsa touchdowns. Only the 11-point lead that Bennett ended up with would allow Tulsa to get back in the game with only a touchdown and a field goal.

At this point, we should just be happy that he won the game. If we were 11-0 and facing a possible BCS berth, and he blows a call, then perhaps we jump on him. Frankly, if we keep winning games, he can blow all the two-point calls he wants. Nobody's perfect, but for a board that is starving for wins, we shouldn't be all that picky (barring NCAA sanctions) how we get them. Could it have cost us the game? Maybe. Maybe not. But it doesn't matter, because it didn't. Let's move on and see if we can't win one more game this season so that we have something to build on recruiting-wise.

Still think he, or Burns needs to go back to A$M this summer, and take Cipherin 101.

From the DMN: Bennett said the coaching staff figured it was still a 3 possession game at the time of the 2-point conversion try.

3 + 8 = 11 But, hey WE WON!!

The way I read the DMN comment, it was Bennett basically telling the Tulsa coach to mind his own business. Nothing more; nothing less.

I don't think the response/explanation was aimed at the Tulsa coach, you know?

Look, lets just hang the guy in the public square or shut up about it. One or the other, but its now Tuesday after a mistake made last Sat. - how long are you going to carry on about this? Not to be sexist, but you guys are starting to sound like a bunch of old women.

By "you guys", I guess you mean the DMN, and Bennett for criticizing the Tulsa coach for calling for going long on pass routes from the Tulsa 2 yard line resulting in our sacking the QB for a safety

Maybe this is the trial before the hangin in the square. I'm just playin devils advocate as DA here.

Oldpony,

Bennett probably claimed that he had forgotten more football than everyone else in the building knew (despite his record). This seems to be his favorite refrain to intentionally belittle the fans of SMU. People like PK, BUS, and PONYFAN buy it, and spend hours defending his boneheaded coaching moves on this board.
