Kansas contacts Hill about coaching vacancy

LAWRENCE, Kan. -- Kansas athletic director Al Bohl has talked with Fresno State football coach Pat Hill about the Jayhawks' vacant job.
Bohl, who spent five years as Fresno State's athletic director before taking the Kansas job in August, hired Hill to run the Bulldogs' program after Jim Sweeney retired in 1997.
Hill confirmed Monday that he was contacted about the Kansas job, left open by the firing of Terry Allen after a 51-7 loss to Nebraska earlier this month. The Jayhawks are 2-7 with two games remaining.
"I've talked to Al Bohl about it," Hill said. "I've got some questions that I sent to him, questions about things that are important to me in building a program. I'll hear back from him on that."
There has been speculation since Bohl arrived in Lawrence that he would like to hire Hill, who led a turnaround at Fresno State. The Bulldogs, 8-2, have established themselves on the national scene this season, opening with a victory over No. 15 Colorado and then upsetting Oregon State.
Hill said any job in the Big 12 would be appealing simply because of the league's strength.
"Right now I know that there are 12 jobs in that conference that are all good jobs," said Hill. "Al Bohl is going to find a very, very good football coach. But right now, I'm very happy with where I'm at and I don't plan on leaving."
Former Arizona coach [deleted] Tomey is another name that reportedly has surfaced in Kansas' search.
Tomey left Arizona after the 2000 season after posting a 95-64-4 as the Wildcats coach. He's currently a color commentator for University of Hawaii football games.
"From my experience with these things, I've learned that's it's not appropriate to comment on anything," Tomey told the Star. "I have not been contacted, but I'm going to have to decline to say anything else."
Other names that have circulated as possibilities include former Oklahoma State coach Pat Jones, now an assistant with the Miami Dolphins, as well as Gary Darnell of Western Michigan and Bob Pruett of Marshall.
