It' about time!!!!Wow, never thought I would see the day when SMU finally gave a @#$% about football. And even more impressed (if the rumours are true) that they are actually talking to some quality coaches. I truly believe it can only get better, and any good coach will want SMU football as their 'project'. As long as the administration will cooperate and 'admininstrate' like all the other D-1 schools do, I think its a great combination. I mean, let's be honest, we could have Bobby Bowden coaching here and with our current administration we would still be losing games (okay, maybe an exaggeration). But my point is: the same administration still exists and they are the root of the problem, so let's not forget to keep the pressure on them amongst all this hoopla...
Re: It' about time!!!!Perhaps the Administration actually had something to do with this if it is true. Big Jim Copeland stated very recently that he would evaluate the coach(es) after the end of the season. It would seem something or someone might have accelerated that schedule just a wee bit.
[This message has been edited by PK (edited 11-18-2001).] SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.
Re: It' about time!!!!Could it be that this was done because SMU didn't blow out Tulsa? A 10-point win over that bunch is not indicative of the talent on our team.
Rise up, Mustang Nation!
Go SMU!
Re: It' about time!!!!Speaking of Big Jim Copeland, it's about time that he headed off the hilltop.
Re: It' about time!!!!I am devistated by the loss. However, I thank him for coming to SMU and giving what,I beleive, was his best effort. I'm sorry it wasn't near enough or that the administration and alumni didn't give him the support he needed.

Re: It' about time!!!!Yeah this is a great loss for SMU. As an alumni I want the best that the university can have, and Cavan is not it. I've been out to practice and all Cavan does is stand around and talk to different people. What are we paying this guy for? All he does is go to games and yell at the referess for three hours. Hell, any drunk in the crowd could do that. I would like to see a coach who does something like maybe call his own plays on one side of the ball. Is that asking to much? We never should have got him in the first place.
Thanks for your time
Re: It' about time!!!!Give Copeland a break. He made a bad decision, but now he's stepping up to the plate and rectifying the situation. Largely to his efforts we can credit the improved recruiting regulations and the best *$%^ football facility in the land!
In my opinion, Copeland is one coaching hire away from being a genius. Let's see how he does in the next few weeks before we start breaking out the pitchforks and lighting the torches. "It's a couple hundred million dollars. I'm not losing sleep over it." -- David Miller
Re: It' about time!!!!Peruna Punch is right. With the possible exception of Schellas Hyndman, Jim Copeland is the best person we have in the athletic department. The man gets things done. Sure, he screwed up hiring Cavan, but as PP says, he's correcting that situation. And give him credit for swinging the axe now, so a new coach can be named and so recruits have a chance to meet and identify with the new coach. It's a lot better that he do this now. With the tragedy in September bumping the UNC game back to Dec. 2, we would have been into December before a new coach had Copeland waited for the end of the season, and that's prime recruiting season. Congratulations to Jim Copeland for making the right decision and making it early enough to hopefully avoid disruption of recruiting season.
