Can't Go Wrong with JIMBO

Postby jettison » Wed Nov 21, 2001 6:35 pm

I like the sound of Jimbo Fisher, and a few of the others like him that have been mentioned. Has grown up with the Bowden connection - even attended the alma mater of Bobby Bowden. I posted a while back that your active legendary colleges tended to go to small (academically inclined) colleges that aren't on TV every week.

He seems very young, offensively minded (would complement the existing Defensive coaching), and energetic. Look at the excitement the teams he has coached have developed. When it comes to coaching, I'm much more a fan of giving someone a chance because of something other than their 'name.' I'm BIG on finding the next Dirk Koetter or Rick Neuheisel or someone like the Boise State coach (forget his name). Young and easily relates to and inspires our lackadaisical youth, of which I'm not far removed.

The few high school players I've known directly and indirectly that were drawing interest from colleges... the majority of them did not care what NFL team some old fart played on before they were born or if he was some hot shot analyst on ESPN. I think many top notch players would be EASILY sold by a young, energetic, in-shape, intelligent coach and staff that offered them a system that their talents could thrive in. The models we have followed in not so distant times are suddenly very outdated. It's like the evolution of all them 'computers.' It's like what the Hopi's prophesize about: The Quickening. I'm sick of SMU being so behind. Remember one of Mike Cavan's biggest selling points - he coached under the legendary Vince Dooley. Big friggin deal. All that meant was he basically travelled to high schools throughout the southeast in the 1970s and early 1980s and tried to give a stud a bigger 'offer' than other schools. It's very much a thinking game now, personnel-oriented plays and lineups, etc... we need some modernism here, in my opinion.

And seriously, can we go wrong with a guy named Jimbo? Has anyone checked to make sure this isn't the bass player for the Reverend Horton Heat?

And another thing, does a team from Texas really want to hire any coaches with any experience in Oklahoma?

If I remember correctly wasn't Darrell Royal - I believe his name is on a stadium in Austin a OU product and was a OU asst before going to UT.

Not sure... again my disillusionment for history is a factor.

But, off on a tangent here... how close is Winchester from Bridgewater? If nearby, you ought to check out the TU/BW game.. you'll find some SMU blood in the visitor stands.
