While not as historically entertaining as the Holiday Bowl, the now-defunct Astro-Bluebonnet Bowl had its moments.
SMU and coach Hayden Fry supplied one of them with a 28-27 win over Oklahoma, behind 281 yards passing by Chuck Hixson. The teams combined for 35 fourth-quarter points.
The Sooners drew within one on a 30-yard touchdown pass from Mickey Ripley to Johnny Barr with 1:16 remaining. But Ripley was stopped on the two-point conversion attempt to give SMU its first bowl victory since the 1949 Cotton Bowl

Truly a great moment in Mustang football history.

My expectant wife and I were in the dome when Hixson & compnay beat OU. I had returned from a tour in Viet Nam in '68, and life was grand.

I'm not sure, but as I recall, after failing on that two-point conversion late in the game, Oklahoma missed a last-second field goal that would have won it for them.

One of my fondest memories of growing up as a Mustang fan was being at this game. And the lovely Diane Cosper, former SMU cheerleader, who is seen kissing me in the photo to the left three years earlier, was sitting behind me and she and I started leading cheers in our section! It was a great game and one that I'll never forget. Does anyone know if this game is available on video/DVD somewhere? I'd love to get a copy for my archives.
H-E-B Mustang: you are correct. As I recall, that FG was blocked.

MM I am sure all of your memories of the game are correct except one. The field goal was just slightly wide right. I was sitting in the end zone seats that OU kicked into.

I was at that game in the Dome as a teenager from the greater Houston area AND.....(gulp) I was actually pulling for the MUSTANGS! It was only a few years later that I would see the (meangreen) light, of course! LOL!
Merry Christmas, Stangs!:)

It was just flat out fun. That was the year OP graduated and was the perfect ending to a season If I am not mistaken, we lost 3 games that year and ended up in the top 10 because our losses were to No 1,2 and 3. I believe OU was co champ of Big 8. (3 way tie with KU and Neb).
