SMU - THE Texas FB Alternative

Postby Water Pony » Sun Jan 02, 2005 1:26 pm

Now that we have watched UT and A$M on the tube yesterday, it is time (starting in '05) for SMU to stake its claim as THE Texas College FB Alternative in the Lone Star State. As THE College Team for Dallas, the Mustangs need to step up as THE alternative to the home teams in Austin and College Station.

Something struck me on a previous post that WHEN SMU returns to glory, Texas College FB will be healthier and more exciting for everyone in the state.

Now that is ambition worth pursuing!

I like your style.

I think TCU just shot themselves in the foot with that incredibly pompous move to the MWC.

Their recruiting will suffer indeed -- they could have been the team to go 11-0 and play the national audience CUSA champ game against a ranked E-CUSA team...and be the BCS buster. Instead they have committed themselves to a 3rd-4th place finish at best out west.

They will lose 2 games a year JUST BECAUSE OF the travel/altitude.

UTEP looks like they are positioning themselves to take advantage of TCU's loss - just as Boise did getting into the WAC. They aren't letting this opportunity pass them by, and Mike Price has endeared himself to the community and UTEP faithful. (See him with the Miner Pick during pre-game?).

Water Pony....what is the point of a post like this?? Have you been hanging out with Mustang335 or MM1967 all weekend? It makes you look like a ding dong.....while traveling over the holidays, I had the opportunity to cruise by UVA, Virg. Tech and UT/Knoxville....not to mention ut and a$m..SMU is SO far from big time college football, it is scary...we are NOT even in the same league, and it starts with our nice little boutique stadium and facilities, admin. req., league, recent trends, etc., etc...we are basically a D-!! program...NOT the vibrant fball alternative in Texas...funny post, bro! Long Live Mike Richardson.

I do know, I'll never go to another Yell Practice thing again or sit in the Texas A&M part of the Cotton Bowl cause that was just a bad mistake

Gee - to me, Water Pony sounds like a loyal fan who wants the best for SMU and for football in Texas. Is there something wrong with that? He's optimistic about his alma mater. Give it a try.

Well...I see that the new year hasn't changed McIlhennytoJames' attitude towards loyal SMU fans like myself and Mustangs35SMU and Waterpony. He continues to p*ss on everyone else's parade.

But seriously...what is your reason for so much animosity towards folks like us who still support the school? And what's your reason for using such belittling adjectives such as 'boutique stadium'? Ford Stadium is a damn nice venue that quite a few universities would give their eye teeth to have on their campuses. (Sounds like Tulane is one of 'em!)

Also, SMU is *far* from a Div. II program! (Have you ever seen a Div. II football game in person?) Heck, we're far from a Div. 1-AA program!

SMU has the chance to become THE football team for Dallas now that the Plowboys are moving west (good riddance, too!) and the Teasips and Aggie$ will be fawning all over themselves (although the Aggie$ should be TOTALLY embarrassed after that performance in The House That Doak Built!).

Interesting examples: Big state schools in BCS conferences with huge alumni and fan bases. I assume we need to add an additional 20,000 undergraduates annually to be competitive.

NOT!!!

We sell being private, the right size student body, great location-DFW, beautiful campus, terrific degree, playing time, and so on. We will thrive by emphasizing what we are and can be, not by comparing ourselves to Cartel members! We are different and that needs to be a positive. We can't start by being naive to our circumstances.

Some of the Aggies I watched the game with had more tears than beer in their mugs by halftime. (Glad we're not playing them first next year.) Puts another dent in the "Big 12 is the best football conference" argument.

Pretty predictable really - Tennessee only lost to Auburn and Auburn is awesome (arguably better then either OU or USC IMO) - Aggies are maybe fourth best in the Big 12 south - This was a mis-match from the gitgo.

Big 12 will look pretty good by Wednesday - national champ, then UT in top 3 or 4, then TT as 14 or 15th probably.

MM1963...D-II, D-IAA, whatever, my point remains, we are low end....YES, I have been to D-II, D-IAA games, in fact, while traveling through VA, stopped at James Madison U....nice school, nice stadium, haven't they had some recent success?? Looks like the type of folks we should be competeng against.....to spout off that we should be THE fball choice of Big D simply makes me laugh, as well as other realistic folks on this board or those who have supported this program....it's called a realistic assesment, something I do every day in biz / life....not a parade pisser, not a negative poster, just a voice of reason, reality. This "rah rah go, let's meet for a soda after the game" crap is funny. Long Live Gary Moten.

I have to give some props to Water Pony. He's at least trying to think of an argument for recruits to come here, not an argument as to why they should stay away. We need to figure out something (other than paying players) to attract the proper calibre of players to SMU. Winning would help alot. I think CUSA will be a big bonus. Next year there are only two games which are not within reasonable driving distance of Dallas (Marshall and UAB). That's 9 games that parents (and girlfriends) can drive to. What is the hook that is needed? My view is athlete friendly major(s). Otherwise, we have a player's coach, great location, great women, respected academics (for mom and dad), great connections for life after football, and state of the art facilities. Why choose Baylor over SMU? Why choose Tech over SMU especially if you are a great defensive player? We know Leach doesn't even know that he has a defense, and they didn't write the song "Happiness is Lubbock Texas in my rear view mirror", for no reason.

Meredithto(fill-in-the-blank): Yes, James Madison University won the Div. 1-AA national championship a few weeks ago in a REAL playoff system, not this BCS crud.

Just out of curiosity: what business are you in where 'realistic assessments' (might want to learn how to spell the word first as well as a few others in your post  ) are done everyday?

You can call yourself a voice of reason all you want but your cynicism with your closing statement speaks volumes about what you think about this school and its 'true fans' and I don't think that's funny whatsoever.
