It's no secret on this board that my alma mater is Sam Houston State which ended the 2004 season ranked #4 in Div. 1-AA. and that SMU is my 'second school'. At the end of the season SHSU's head coach Ron Randleman announced his retirement after holding the position since 1982.

A new head coach is now being sought for the Bearkats and the final four candidates have been named. I'm pleased to see that a former SMU graduate assistant receivers coach (1991) is on that 'short list': Turner Gill. His most recent position was as the QB coach at Nebraska from which he retired last month.

The other 3 candidates are Todd Whitten (Tarleton State), Willie Fritz (Southwest Missouri State) and James Ferguson (Sam Houston State assistant coach). The announcement of the new HC for SHSU will probably be next week.

I'd be tickled pink for another SMU/Sam Houston State connection!

Coach Gill didn't get the nod. Sam Houston's new head football coach will be Todd Whitten, head coach of Div. II Tarleton State University in Stephenville, Texas.

We now return to SMU football matters on this board!
