As a quarterback at New Mexico, set numerous school records and finished fifth in the nation in total offense in 1976 ... A second-team All-Western Athletic Conference selection ... Finished 11th in the nation in total offense in 1977.

Noel Mazzone grew up on a Boy Scout Ranch in Philmont, N.M. Mazzone’s father was employed by the Boy Scouts and Noel helped in all different areas on the ranch including working with cattle and a buffalo herd. The only sport the high school on the ranch sponsored was basketball, so the family moved 40 miles away and Mazzone started playing football in his junior year. As a senior quarterback, he was recruited by Notre Dame. But head coach Ara Parseghian called him and told him that they only had one spot open to sign a quarterback and had decided to go with another recruit named Joe Montana.
