Ex-TCU star Robbins shot by Miami Beach police
12:24 PM CST on Sunday, January 16, 2005

Associated Press

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. - Former pro football player and ex-TCU star Barret Robbins was hospitalized Sunday after he was shot by a police officer investigating a burglary at a South Beach office, authorities said.

The one-time Pro Bowl center sustained "multiple gunshot wounds" in the torso Saturday night from Miami Beach police investigating a report of a robbery in the administrative office of a building that houses a nightclub, a gym and a jewelry store, police spokesman Bobby Hernandez said.

Robbins was inside the office and had a "violent struggle" with detectives before Detective Mike Muley shot the former Oakland Raiders lineman, Hernandez said.

"The officer was literally fighting for his life, trying to get Mr. Robbins from getting his gun. That's when the shots rang out," Hernandez said.

Robbins, 31, was rushed to Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital in critical condition. Muley suffered minor head injuries in the scuffle and was treated at a hospital and released.

Hernandez said Robbins had not yet been charged in the case because authorities had not been able to interview him.

Robbins was arrested last month in San Francisco for hitting a security guard at a night club.

The often-troubled player is best remembered for disappearing the night before the 2003 Super Bowl in San Diego. He spent Super Bowl Sunday in a hospital and later acknowledged that he had stopped taking his medicine for depression and bipolar disorder. The Raiders lost 48-21 to Tampa Bay.

Robbins was released by Oakland in July, a week after he and two other players were fined three game checks for testing positive for the steroid THG.

In the spirit of our rivalry with TCU, I often say I "hate" the Frogs. But a story like this brings a dose of reality. Robbins' family and the TCU community are in my thoughts. He sounds like a troubled young man, and I wish him nothing but survival, a return to health and a solution to what ails him.

Extraordinarily well said, Corso.
Here's hoping for a healthy turnaround for Barrett and his family.

Given what happened before the Super Bowl and this incident, it is clear this young man really needs some serious help. I hope his family gets him the treatment he needs so that he is able to learn to cope with life or failing that to put somewhere will he will not be a danger to himself or others.

Have to agree with East, the pre-Super Bowl incident should have been the red flag that Robbins needs serious help. His case sounds like someone with a chemical imbalance in their brain, possibly exacerbated by his steroid use. He needs treatment. Perhaps he has already sought help, but has a problem taking his medication regularly, that might explain why he still has episodes like this. Pulling himself together is going to take a lot of work, both by Robbins and the people around him. I hope he gets the help he needs.

My neighbor, a TCU X, played with Robbins and even dated a girl that Robbins ended up dating later. Sad story.

Robbins is from Terrell I think he said. Nice guy and all.

Sure hope he gets better and then gets the help he needs.
