Oscar Giles, a former Longhorn and NFL defensive end, has been named an assistant coach at Texas, head coach Mack Brown announced on Sunday. Giles will coach UT's defensive ends, replacing [deleted] Tomey, who was named head coach at San Jose State in December. It's Giles' second coaching stint with the Longhorns.

"Oscar was an outstanding player here and in the NFL and CFL," Brown said. "He's a bright, energetic, young coach who was a valuable member of our staff in 1999 and has gained a great deal of experience as an assistant at SMU and Houston over the past five years. We're so excited to have one of our own back with us."

Giles has spent the past two seasons as an assistant coach at the University of Houston, where he worked with the Cougars’ defensive line. He joined the Houston staff prior to the 2003 season after spending three seasons at SMU. Giles helped the Cougars to a 7-6 mark and a spot in the Hawaii Bowl in 2003, the first bowl appearance for UH in eight seasons.

Always liked Oscar. I wish him well .... despite his choice of employers.
