LSU Message Boards: Many want Bennett as Miles' new DC

Very interesting reading on www.tigerforums.com With Dave Campo becoming the DC at JAX and George Edwards becoming the DC at Miami (two interviewees for the DC position at LSU), many on some of the LSU boards are wondering if they might be able to get Phil Bennett back. At one time Bennett was an assistant coach for LSU, and was very respected for his defensive mind.

I haven't chimed in on them, as I occasionally do, that Bennett isn't going to leave SMU to become a DC at LSU...but I do think it's a plug for Bennett. Trust me, LSU fans are probably the hardest people to please when it comes to college football, and they don't give kudos to ANYONE unless it's deserved.

By the way, an observation: Our board is just dead compared to the LSU boards. I don't know if it's because of the coaching changes or awesome recruiting prospects at LSU, but I find myself spending more time there than I do here since the end of FB season. There's a lot of interesting stuff there. We need to liven this board up!! Any new scoop???

I think it is an important point to make that Bennett still has a lot of respect as a recruiter and defensive coordinator. If, as so many people seem to hope for, Bennett were fired, he'd have a new job within a week as a DC for a Big 12 or SEC school. His recruiting responsibility would be Texas.

Something to think about.

The only place Bennett dosen't get respect is around here :!: I told you guys a while back to check the SMU media guide bio. Coach has what it takes,we just need to get the players up to speed(experience) :!: :D WE WILL WIN SOON !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think somthing that hurts this board is that you have the three major categories seperated instead of combined - most epople only visit football, bu tif they saw posts from recruiting or basketball they might add something interesting. Just a suggestion -

LSU has 10 times the number of fans we do attending their games and because they generally sellout, who knows how many more are at home watching on TV or listening on radio. I expect LSU and MOST of the big boys have far more than 10 times the number of interested fans than we do. This board is a reflection of our true fan base.

Long live the 1500

And they did just get a new coach which stirs everything up. Last year we were talking C-USA, and the Froggies defecting to the MWC.

After going 0 - 12 Bennett looked like he should be sending resumes every where. A +3 win improvement, especially 2 wins near the end of the season when a lot of teams would've given up, shows that he may just get us to a bowl game in a couple of years :!:

If he doesn't get to bowl in 2 years its over. Gambling on JUCOs and questionable HS recruiting this year. Martin and a QB had better step it up as well as the JUCO kids. If they do then Bowl city, if not it is downhill from 3 wins.

HFvictory, maybe you should be more worried about your Froggie's over the next couple of years.

Wait until signing day. I think the Frogs bring in a very nice class this year with a 4 star JUCO safety and lots of defensive help. Corderra Hunter is switching from Tech to TCU and hopefully Hodge signs also. Korey Mangum & Russell Ball visit this weekend, but don't expect anything from that, but hey we are in the running. Like many teams we need a big DT, so who knows what the future holds.

Basically, like every recruiting class there is a gamble. Bennett is rolling the dice big time and the chances of it working are not great, but who knows. Price at UTEP loves the JUCO route and won big, but the players were higher rated to begin.

Personally, I want SMU to improve. We live near campus and my son will play at LHHS. Love the area.

The idea that Miles would hire Coach Bennett -- or anyone else -- because the fans wanted it is as silly as the idea that SMU would fire Coach Bennett just because fans here were upset with some early-season losses. Coach Bennett isn't leaving to be a DC anywhere. He's our coach, and I'm damn glad he is.

Seems like I recall a contract extension signed recently by Coach... assuming we covered our @sses, I can't imagine why we would give permission to any school to discuss with him a demotion to defensive coordinator.

I hear that Matt Stafford may announce an early commit as well. :P
