This was mentioned in a larger news story in today's DMN about the history and anniversary observance of Heritage Christian Academy in Rockwall, TX.

"The school offers varied extracurricular activities. Because of its small size, students interested in athletics can play year round, instead of having to specialize in a sport.

Volunteer coach Butch Jones' son, Derek, was one of a few invited to walk on to the Southern Methodist University football team and possibly earn a scholarship. Other Heritage students have earned scholarships for activities such as horse showing, drama and vocal performance.

And, supporters say, they balance their activities with a quality education. Mr. Jones said Derek has nearly a 4.0 GPA at Heritage, scored higher than 1200 on his SAT and has already received academic scholarships. "

Anyone know anything else about this young man?

I don't know anything about him, but I always like coaches' kids. Give me another Mick Rossley any day.

Welcome to SMU, Derek!

Anyone know how big or strong or quick he is?

FYI - I would hope that he really killed people in TAPPS. It is kind of litle slow football. Not being mean but the pool of students are usually rich, smart and not focused on athletics. You do have exceptions.

I think the 'exception' lies in the fact that his father is a coach so I think he's got the right 'mental attitude'.
