Today in the Washington Post, I read that the NCAA is investigating whether William and Mary should be allowed to retain its nickname (among 30 other schools). William and Mary used to be called the Indians (which made sense since it started out as a school to teach Indians). Due to pressure, it changed its name to the Tribe. No native American group in Virginia (which has about 200 indiginous Tribes) complained, but the NCAA isn't so sure. So instead of spending its valuable resources dealing with schools like Georgia, Tennessee, South Carolina, Kentucky, Minnesota, Michigan, and their disregard for NCAA rules, it is spending its enforcement dollars on political correctness. Ain't that grand.

You can't say you're surprised, are you?

Maurice Clarett can accept every benefit there is, and Ohio State has one fewer has one fewer clarinet in its marching band.

You don't expect the NCAA to be saddled with a sudden dose of logic, do you?

I just hope W&M, whose dominant color is green, is not forced to change its name to something lame and generic like "Mean Green," "Big Green," or "Green Wave." Nothing is more annoying than this. Examples of astounding lack of imagination and timidness in the face of rampant political correctness abound. For example, when St. Johns changed their name from the Redmen, they could have picked anything. It's an old school, rich in local history, in Queens NY, an old community rich in tradition and local history. And they chose "Red Storm." Pitiful. What is this, NFL-Europe? My personal favorite: when the DUTCH got a burr in their cooch over Hofstra's "Flying Dutchman" mascot (in my opinion, one of the coolest, most unique mascot names in all of sports -- and I guess it was the Dutch. Seriously who else could it be?), what did they change their name to? The Hofstra "PRIDE." I repeat: "The Pride." How GAY is that? Where is your HISTORY????

I am thankful SMU is named for a wild steed of the prairie, and will never have to deal with any of this BS.

Well, given the choice between "Gay Lions" and "Pride" I think they chose wisely. Not that there's anything wrong with being gay...or a lion....

I've said it before and I'll say it again: the NCAA are a bunch of Nazis.
