Muse's return is huge. Justin Rogers might well be our best DE, and Don Ieremia-Stansbury should be better back at DE. Troy Therien isn't fast, but he seemed in the spring like a high-motor guy who will go all out on every play. But Muse brings a speed element unlike any of them. He could add a new dimension to the defense in an area -- the pass rush -- where a little speed would be immensely valuable.
Rise up, Mustang Nation!
Go SMU!
As a defensive end, what's the biggest effect from a torn ACL? Is it the initial burst at the snap of the ball? The change of direction when making moves to get around some big OT? Flat-out sprinting speed? The ability to stop and jump up to knock down passes? Someone told me it was the torque put on a knee when you have a big guy leaning on you, for whatever that's worth. Obviously, I never played on the line, so I just don't know.
"It's 106 miles to Chicago, we've got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark and we're wearing sunglasses."
... "Hit it."
That depends on which knee it is. If Muse lines up on the left side like he did before he got hurt, then it's his left knee that will take the most lateral pressure as he tries to push off with his left foot to keep from being pushed outside by a big OT, or as he plants to spin back inside. At a position like DE, which relies more and more on quickness and burst, it's sometimes a matter of confidence in the knee as much as it is getting the strength back.
Cory Muse is running great.I don't know about cutting and shifting directions, etc., but as far as straight-ahead running, he's showing a lot of good speed.
