Famous SMU alumni need to get with it

Maybe its just me, but SMU needs its famous alumni to start helping publicize SMU, esp the athletic department. Remember the days of yester-year when Bob Hope could be seen playing golf with a Mustang Mania hat on, and he didn't even go to SMU. Well, my friends, its time for our famous alumni brother & sisters to step up to the plate. Would it hurt to have First Lady Laura Bush sporting an SMU sweater for all of those photographers to see. Or how about Aaron Spelling doing some cheerleading for a marketing campaign? SMU is the alma mater of so many powerful people, its about time they started doing whatever they can to help bring back a positive image on this school, one that doesn't always end up being associated with "The Death Penalty."

I agree. One thing we need to do better is MARKETING.

It may be a budget thing or a political thing but we NEED high profile Mustangs to do something.

Got Milk

Got Mustangs

Well BUS, I think it should be pointed out that the Marketing Deptartment is doing the best they can with what they are given. But for some reason our alumni have decided to run away from the school. I am just sick and tired of the famous alumni not coming back and wanting to help. So if you know how we can get the famous 'Stangs back on the Hilltop, let us know.

Well if the Marketing Department is doing the best they can, they just might want to look for another job. Just a little creativity goes a long way. Send SMU clothing to "famous" alumni so they can be seen in it. It is not like they can get it anywhere else. Invite said alumni back for awards or other reasons to get press releases out. Bring back Mustang Mania and pay a bounty for every sticker left at historic places in France. Think of the fun we could have with that. Do something, anything, but don't tell me we are doing the best that we can.

Now we get back to the statement from ED about free or discounted merchandise. SMU should regulary send free, thats FREE, sweatshirts t-shirts and caps to our high profile alumni. Just imagine Laura leaving the White House on her way to Camp David in that SMU sweatshirt she just happend to wear that morning. Or Aaron Spelling doing an interview on the set on the day he just happened to wear his SMU t-shirt. It just goes on and on and on. It is marketing, marketing, marketing.

But at SMU, we can't use the M word.

How about giving the alumni football and basketball teams that they can be proud of for what they are doing on the field/court - not just in the classroom???

why should we just send it to alumni, why not all types of famous people, especially rappers that wear a lot of atheletic apparrell. If they happen to wear it for an interview or a video, that could get us more exposure to the recruits that we want then sending it to Laura Bush or Aaron Spelling. Send something to Xzibit or Snoop. That would generate more pubility for our sports teams than anything else except winning.

I saw Xzibit on his MTV show "Pimp My Ride" two separate times wearing La Tech jerseys. A football Bradshaw jersey and a Malone bball jersey, and I'm pretty sure Xzibit didnt go there. I think some Dickerson jerseys could go a long way in the hip-hop world, if they were more available. I like the way you think, abezontar, you should be in graduate school at SMU.

First, SMU needs to stop [deleted] off some of its more famous alumni. Also, they need to do better to reach out to alumni in other regions than Texas, since that is where many of these folks live and/or work. SMU also need to get involved with merchandising and marketing outreach. SMU lost out big back when the movie "Jerry Maguire" came out. I know as I worked on the movie. SMU was to be highly promoted, but it fell apart because the school let it.

The kid qb "Frank Cushman" who was played by Jerry O'Connell was from SMU. They had all kinds of SMU paraphenalia around Jerry Maguire's office. They had a huge life size cut out of "Cushman" dressed in a SMU uniform. When they were speaking with his father, he was to be drinking out of a SMU logo glass. They had other stuff, almost to much to mention. Watch the movie and see how it all went away, courtesy SMU admin.

Beauty.

Go Ponies!

I suspect that the Administration was a little uncomfortable with the concept of "show me the money" and the rampant greed that the QB character showed. Suffice it to say that is a little too close to home.

Have to agree with EastStang on this one. That is not the best kind of publicity to get, especially with our past.

And you would wear bottom of the barrel NFL jerseys too, right? That's what I thought.

Yeah, BUT......Have you seen the trailers of a cheap looking new movie coming out based around UT, and has UT cheerleaders, football games, etc. in it??

I remember in 76 or so when we played Alabama a movie crew filmed that game for a movie. The ncaa said NO, it can't be in the movie because you could recognize the Mustang decal on the side of the helmets. Now because of the money grubbing BCS crowd grabbing anything they can get, I guess that rule no longer applies.
