Oklahoma State football player and Duncanville High grad Vernon Grant was killed in a car accident in Dallas Monday night.

Grant, 22, was a three-year starter at safety at OSU. Last season he had 67 tackles, two sacks, two interceptions, two fumble recoveries and two forced fumbles. He recorded a team-high nine tackles in the Alamo Bowl.

Duncanville football coach Dan Schreiber called Grant well-rounded, pointing to his National Honor Society status as a high schooler.

“All the things people are going to dwell on are not what made him special,” said Schreiber, who was Duncanville’s defensive coordinator when Grant attended the school. “He’s a great athlete, a great football player, but he had a 3.85 GPA here. And he always gave back.”

Schreiber said Grant gave a speech to Duncanville football players two weeks ago, telling the seniors what their responsibilities were on and off the field.

Said Schreiber: “The one thing he said that hit home was, ‘I play because I love it. That’s how you’ve got to do everything in your world.’ He’s one of those kids the media people don’t write about – he’s not in trouble, he’s the best part of any organization he’s part of. You never doubted his effort or sincerity.”

I think his mother passed away within the last year as well. I hope he has no siblings, because that would be tough.
