One item I found to be interesting in this article was that Bell got released from A&M because he couldn't beat SMU. He then joined the SMU coaching staff and a year later became our head coach after which "Bell's first team at SMU swept through the 12-game regular season on the way to the national championship, before losing to Stanford, 7-0, in the Rose Bowl." Brings up the old debate...is it the quality of the players or the coach that makes a team successful?
