COLLEGE STATION - Redshirt freshmen Erik Mayes and Jorrie Adams were dismissed Monday from the Texas A&M football team for violating team rules, the school announced.
"It is unfortunate, and I am disappointed that it has to reach this point," A&M coach Dennis Franchione said in a statement. "We wish both of these young men well."
The school didn't specify what rules were broken.
Mayes, a 5-9, 177-pound defensive back from Humble, had 69 tackles and one interception last year. He started once at cornerback and was also the Aggies' top punt returner with 20 returns for 122 yards.
Adams, a 6-7, 282-pound defensive lineman from Jasper, had 22 tackles last year in a reserve role.

I wonder what they did. Jorrie Adams was one of the most highly sought linemen in the country when he came out. Some said he might have been the best OT prospect in the country at the time.

Are these guys worth pursuing (depending, of course, on their indescretions)? Adams sounds like a monster, and Mayes apparently has some ability, as well. Adams is from Jasper -- isn't that close to being in Bennett country? Or are these guys not worth the risk?

Well...we'd have to wait at least one year before they could even play since they're coming from another Div. 1-A school, correct? However, rumor has it that at least one of them is eyeing a certain Div. 1-AA school just east of College Station and that means he might be on the field this Fall.

Texas A&M defensive back Erik Mayes and defensive end Jorrie Adams were dismissed from the football team Monday for violating unspecified team rules, said head coach Dennis Franchione in a statement.
A&M officials refused to say why they were released.
Law enforcement records show that Mayes, 20, was arrested May 27 for marijuana possession at his home at 4302 College Main in Bryan, but an A&M spokesman did not know that Mayes had been arrested or if it had anything to do with Mayes being kicked off the team.
He was released on $2,000 bond on the day he was arrested for the Class B misdemeanor, which is punishable by up to 180 days in jail and a $2,000 fine.
Mayes was with the team during spring drills and played in the Maroon and White Game, but Adams had been suspended in mid-March and missed spring practice.
At the time, Franchione said Adams was “dealing with issues.â€
Franchione said the matter would be handled internally, which has been his policy.
Efforts to reach both by phone were unsuccessful.
Alan Cannon, A&M’s associate athletic director for media relations, said they are not enrolled in summer school.
Franchione was unavailable for further comment. He was in Fort Worth on Monday for the Fort Worth/Tarrant County Coach’s Night.
“ It is unfortunate and I am disappointed that it has to reach this point,†Franchione said in a news release. “We wish both of these young men well.â€
Adams and Mayes were part of A&M’s redshirt freshmen last year who helped turn a 4-8 team into a 7-5 Cotton Bowl squad. Both were expected to challenge for starting positions in the fall.
Mayes, who played in 12 games, was the top tackler among the reserves with 69. He broke up a team-best eight passes. He also led the team in punt returns with 20 for 122 yards.
The 6-foot-7, 282-pound Adams had 22 tackles in 12 games, including four behind the line of scrimmage. He had seven solo tackles against Texas.
Adams was a Parade and USA Today All-American at Class 3A Jasper High School. Mayes was the 22-5A Most Valuable Player at Humble High School.

Methinks we'll go nowhere near these two.
