Starting defensive tackle will be redshirted
09:38 PM CDT on Friday, June 10, 2005
Starting DT Desmond Jones (Carter) will not play this season because of violations of team rules. Coach Phil Bennett said Jones, a junior, will be redshirted and given a chance to return for 2006. Bennett would not comment on the violations. Also, sophomore DT Kendall Mouton (Arlington Lamar) is academically ineligible and will not return. LB Clayton Cox, a junior college transfer from Garden City, Kan., will not attend SMU. Cox will transfer to Kansas State.

What is the deal? Are we jinxed?

Clayton Cox, I think, was homesick and missed his girlfriend.

suddenly the interior defense becomes a major concern. Too late to consider a 3-4 scheme? Of course, Brandon Bonds might be the only NT candidate on the roster. We'll just have to see how our 260-270 lb DTs hold up. Makes it more important than ever for the offense to start contributing!

I had heard that we were going to have some academic issues. Come on guys, you have to go to class, read the book and even pass the test. It ain't that hard.
DT's for next year.
Bonds at 305
Haywood at 275 ?? size
Denman at 275 ?? size
Lucky Delay at 265 small
Two Recruits
Brad Lankford at 280 - better
Chase Smith at 280 - better
There are a couple others that are too small at too big and slow.
Lets see what happens - GO MUSTANGS

you can't sugarcoat this. Its getting real old. Thats basically 3 defensive starters we just lost on an already thin and unproven squad. Discouraging to say the least. So much for our JC recruiting wins, 2 of them never set foot on the field.

you might want hold your breath until August-there may be more academic casualties. As for Jones- we've probably caught a break he remains in our future plans.

Good lord...Next, we'll hear Nnabuiffe has lupus. Why can't people just go to class? Why??? No excuse.
At least Carrington and Muse will be back, I suppose.

Don’t know the specifics of these cases, but it makes you wonder if this isn’t one of those ‘competitive disadvantages’ that SMU still carries post-DP.
I mean, how many other D1-A programs would gut their interior front in such a make-or-break season?
A great question someone close to Bennett could ask him is…â€If Desmond Jones had committed the same violation at K-State, would he have been suspended for an entire season, especially given the critical role he was expected to playâ€

Obviously the punishment fits the violation. Congrats to Bennett for running a 'tight ship'! Gentlemen, there's a word called 'responsibility'. The other players have obviously either already learned it or will soon!

Obviously the punishment fits the violation. Congrats to Bennett for running a 'tight ship' at SMU! I don't care about Kansas State. Gentlemen, there's a word called 'responsibility'. The other players have obviously either already learned it or will soon!
