KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Tennessee receiver Bret Smith is back on the team after coach Phillip Fulmer ended his suspension for an on-campus fight in April.

Smith and former Tennessee quarterback Brent Schaeffer were charged with misdemeanor assault stemming from an altercation in a campus dorm.

They pleaded guilty on Thursday to a lesser misdemeanor, offensive touching, in a deal with prosecutors. They were sentenced to six months of judicial diversion and ordered to pay restitution to the victim.

"I remain very disappointed we have had any of these kinds of issues at all but am pleased with the results in court for Bret," Fulmer said in a statement released late Thursday. "He will return to our active roster and the suspension is lifted, however he will continue to be disciplined internally for his immature actions and poor representation of our team."

Schaeffer left Tennessee shortly after his arrest and plans to transfer.

Smith led all receivers last year as a sophomore with five touchdown catches.

Offensive touching? What's that worth, 10 yards and a loss of down?

First, Schaeffer was the one that got in the fight. He was pretty much forced off the team. Smith "got his back" and wasn't very involved in the incident that was caught on tape.

Second, keep on believing that SMU players neve get in fights.
