I know Forest wasn't perfect, but I'm ok with this one. Forrest would have been so much more successful if he didn't have Pye running the University. Forest is a bigger than life character and an SMU legend. How I wish he was 15 years younger and running the programs now. You didn't have to see him to know he was in the room, and he loved the Ponies in a way that Copeland never could.

Am I wrong to think that Forrest Gregg should have spoken up and said that this was no way to run an athletic department? Call me crazy, but he didn't do a dang thing as AD.

This is why, when people talk about canning Copeland and replacing him with "a real mustang", I get very nervous. Yes, I want an AD that gets as upset with losing as much as me, but I also want an AD that knows how to run an athletic department.

He may have been AD, but he wasn't a god. His boss was President Pye who would not even allow Forrest to continue on as head football coach while assuming the duties of the AD. For all we know, he may very well have told Pye that this was no way to run an athletic department. Do ya really think it would have made a difference to Pye?

Who do you think wanted to be HC or AD at SMU starting back from the dead with Ken Pye in charge. Be ever greatful to Gregg for stepping up when his alma mater needed him badly for credibility.

Bill McCartney did at one time, but changed his mind, I guess.

Running an athetic department and running an athletic department successfully are two different things.

JT- I don't remember that being the same time. My statement stands though. Gregg has more credibility than anyone we could have gotten-by far. Unless you want to start a religious movement.

I'm pretty sure it was coming back from the DP when he left us at the alter. And coming from Colorado gave him a certain amount of credibility, which he lost when he jilted us. But let's face facts, Gregg was an afterthought when we could not get McCartney.

If Gregg was an afterthought, he was better than the first one. McCarthy can't carry his luggage. Bill did have a great line when at CU though. He talked to the boosters and said "We'll find out who runs this program, me or Bob Six (big CU booster)". Bill was fired the next day.
